Over the years, ceiling fans have gone through a complete makeover. Unlike traditional fans that didn’t offer much variety, the new age fans offer a wide range of buying options. And therefore, it is but obvious for anyone to feel confused when buying a ceiling fan online or offline. If you too are looking to buy fans online here’s a list of the features and specifications that you should consider before you make a purchase.

Blade Sweep Range

Usually, fans come with three, four or five blades. But instead of considering the number of blades as a parameter to judge a fan’s performance, you should focus on the blade sweep (also known as fan sweep) and the size of the room. For bigger rooms, you would want fans with bigger blades as they can cover a larger area.

Airflow

Ceiling fan airflow is often overlooked. But it’s one of the most important factors to consider when buying a fan online because it’s the airflow that determines the performance of a fan. Airflow is a measure of the volume of air that a fan circulates per minute  and it is measured in CMM (cubic meter per minute). To find out what would be an appropriate airflow for your fan, you can get in touch with an expert at Luminous.

Fan Speed (RPM)

A fan’s speed (RPM) depends on its motor. A more powerful motor will be able to generate a much higher RPM. In other words, the number of rotations per minute of the fan blades will increase with the increase in motor size, thereby contributing to a much higher airflow.

Pitch

Pitch, also referred to as .blade tilt, is yet another factor that one cannot ignore when purchasing a fan online. It is the blade tilt or pitch that determines the volume of air a fan circulates in a room. Most experts recommend that the pitch should neither be too high nor too less. A pitch range of 12-15 degrees is suggested as an ideal range. Avoid fans with a pitch range of less than 10 degrees or greater than 20 degrees.

Downrod Size

The down rod is the rod on which the fan hangs from the ceiling. The length of the downrod depends on the height of the ceiling. It is recommended that the distance between the fan and floor should be a minimum of 7 feet for safety reasons. For ideal air dispersion, this distance should be 7.5 feet. This means a room with a standard ceiling size of 9.5 feet to 10 feet, a standard downrod is ideal. Whereas in a room with a high ceiling the downrod can be a little longer with the distance between the fan blades and floor being 8.5 feet. In case of rooms with false ceilings (or low height ceilings) the downrod should be shorter. The distance between the ceiling and fan blades should be around 9 inches to 10 inches, for a good airflow.

These were some of the functional aspects of a fan that you need to consider when buying a fan online. As far as choosing the design aspect of a fan, if you are unsure of what design would go best with your home decor, we suggest you check out the wide range of Luminous designer fans that are not just aesthetically pleasing but are energy efficient also.
