NEW DELHI (India CSR): Bosch India’s employee-led social impact platform, Primavera, has grown from a shared concern for children in need into a long-running movement of volunteering, fundraising and community support. Its cultural fundraising initiative, Spark of Joy, has completed 12 editions since beginning in 2015. In this interview with India CSR, Sanjay Hande, Head of Manufacturing and Technology Management, Bosch India, discusses how the initiative has evolved, its focus on education and skills, and the company’s approach to measuring long-term community outcomes.
Excerpts from an interview:
Spark of Joy has completed 12 editions. How has the initiative evolved since its inception, and what impact has it created over the years?
Spark of Joy began in 2015 as a cultural fundraising event but has grown into something much larger over the last 12 seasons. Today, it stands as a platform where talent, volunteering and social purpose blend together. Spark of Joy was created to bring Bosch associates across companies and locations together, create awareness about Primavera and raise funds for children in need. Over the years, its reach and relevance have steadily expanded to include 17 projects across 6 cities supporting around 5,500 beneficiaries in 2026.
But the real impact goes beyond numbers. Spark of Joy has created a community of colleagues who give their time and talent, children who find confidence and a stage to express themselves, and projects that create lasting change through education, nutrition, healthcare, and vocational skills. Perhaps, twelve seasons later, its biggest evolution is in being a shared tradition of giving, one that people return to year after year to witness the difference that it makes.
What makes the Bosch Primavera model of employee-led social impact unique in the CSR landscape?
What stands out about the Bosch-Primavera model is that social impact is not something employees merely contribute to: they help own it. Primavera itself began when ten Bosch associates came together in 1990 around a shared concern for children in need. Its operating principle has remained deliberately local: projects are supported where Bosch has a presence, enabling associates close to the community to stay connected to how support is used. The model also creates a strong line of trust between contribution and impact. In India, 100% of the funds raised through Spark of Joy go into the projects, while Bosch takes care of the administrative expenses. And through Spark of Joy, employees contribute not only money, but their time, creativity, and talent to raise awareness and funds across Bosch companies and locations. That is what makes the model special: Bosch provides the ecosystem, Primavera provides the purpose, partner organizations create impact on the ground, and employees bring the cause to life. Therefore, it is less of a conventional CSR program and more of an employee-led movement of shared responsibility where giving becomes participation, and participation creates a much deeper connection to the people whose lives are changing.
Primavera India supports 17 projects across six cities. What criteria does Bosch use when selecting and supporting partner organizations?
To ensure sustainability and long-term impact of our efforts, the guiding principle behind project selection has remained unchanged. Primavera India supports projects in locations where Bosch has a presence, enabling local associates to stay closely connected with the initiatives and ensure that every contribution directly benefits children and young people. As a matter of principle, our projects aim to go beyond short-term assistance. Through healthcare, education, vocational training, and a wide range of developmental support, we strive to create sustainable opportunities that empower children and young people to build a better and more independent future.
Education is a common theme across many Primavera-supported projects. Why is it such a critical focus area for Bosch India?
Education is a critical focus area for India because it is one of the strongest enablers of breaking the cycle of poverty and creating long-term independence. For many children from disadvantaged communities, access to quality education is not just about academic learning; it can determine whether they get a chance to build a stable career, improve their health and well-being, and contribute meaningfully to their families and communities. The real impact is therefore generational: when we educate one child, we are not only changing one life; we are creating the possibility of changing an entire family’s future.
How does Bosch measure the long-term impact of its community development initiatives?
At Bosch, we measure long-term impact through a clear outcome and impact framework, not just activities or beneficiaries reached. We track baseline data and follow-up outcomes over 1, 3, and 5 years across education, health, employability, and financial independence. We use independent evaluations periodically to validate whether the change can reasonably be attributed to the initiative. Scale and Sustainability are two important dimensions of our CSR philosophy.
What role does vocational training and skill development play in empowering underserved communities?
Bosch has a long and rich history with vocational training and skill development. The Bosch vocational training center is at the heart of this change. 22,819 youth, including 8,932 women, are a part of Bosch skill-development programs; 390 trainers were also upskilled to strengthen training quality . Through BRIDGE alone, 13,065 youth across 20 states and 2 Union Territories were enrolled, with an average 70% placement rate demonstrating Bosch’s focus on employability, not just training. This belief continues with Primavera too, where vocational training plays a critical role in creating economic independence and sustainable livelihoods for underserved communities. They provide job-ready skills aligned with real market opportunities, improving employability. They help young people move from dependency to stable income and self-reliance.
How are technology and STEM education being integrated into Primavera-supported initiatives?
Bosch Primavera India supports Soham Academy of Human Excellence, enabling the implementation and expansion of robotics and the RIA program across government schools. The initiative is creating meaningful learning opportunities by bringing practical STEM education into government institutions. Through hands-on robotics activities, students develop confidence, curiosity, and a passion for technology. The program also opens doors to future careers in science, engineering, and related fields. In the 2026–27 academic year, the partnership expanded to 28 government schools and one government college, bringing practical STEM education and future-ready skills to an even larger number of students.
What have been some of the most impactful success stories to emerge from Primavera-supported projects?
Primavera’s impact is best seen in lives that have moved from vulnerability to possibility. At Prasanna Jyothi, more than 150 orphaned and underprivileged girls have grown into educated, self-reliant women, building careers in India and abroad. At Deepa Academy, visually impaired students have pursued higher education, built digital and life skills, and moved towards employment and competitive examinations. At Ashraya Neelbagh, first-generation learners have received vocational training in carpentry, building practical skills, confidence and pathways to skilled employment. Many go on to college, carrying with them the potential to transform their families’ future. Additionally, for us, some of the most moving moments, over the years have unfolded on the Spark of Joy stage itself with children from Prasanna Jyothi and Ashraya Neelbagh. From hesitant first steps to performances that bring audiences to their feet, we have literally watched them grow before our eyes. Along the way, we have seen uncertainty giving way to confidence, hesitation turn into expression, and children discover the joy of being seen, heard, and applauded. And that perhaps, is the most beautiful success story of all.
Looking ahead, what are Bosch India’s priorities for expanding the reach and impact of Primavera India?
Bosch India remains deeply committed to its mission, driven by its core values and the passion of our employees. We are united by one shared purpose for Primavera India – helping children in need and enabling every child with the opportunity to live with dignity, learn, grow, and build a better future for themselves and the country.
