Sumit Deb assumes charge as CMD, NMDC

Sumit Deb has assumed charge as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NMDC Limited on 01 August, 2020. Prior to assuming the role of CMD, NMDC, Sumit Deb was Director (Personnel) and succeeds N. Baijendra Kumar, IAS, who has superannuated from the services of the Corporation. He brings with him vast knowledge gathered through his extensive experience at RINL & NMDC. He aspires to help NMDC reach new heights and levels of success.

He joined NMDC as General Manager (Commercial) in 2015, later he was then promoted as Executive Director (Personnel & Administration) at NMDC. In 2019 he assumed charge as Director (Personnel) and was heading various functions of Personnel & Admin, Human Resource Development, Law, Corporate Communications, CSR, Rajbhasha and has given a new dimension to company’s vision & objectives.

Sumit Deb is a graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneshwar. Prior to NMDC, he was with Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL). He joined as a Management Trainee and worked with RINL for about 25 years accumulating rich and diverse experience in the steel industry. He has worked in different regions of the country, dealing with heterogeneous mix of both external as well as internal customers and handling the domains of HR, marketing & distribution.

Deb has diverse experience in man power & succession planning, training & development and other HR functions. He also has experience in the marketing and distribution of steel & iron ore, sponge iron, pellets and diamonds. He has proven his capabilities by achieving various milestones along his career path. He was awarded with Jawahar Purushkar in the year 2007 – 08 for his outstanding performance.

Commenting on his tenure with NMDC, Shri N Baijendra Kumar, IAS, said “I was fortunate enough to be part of this dynamic & vibrant company which is on the growth path by diversifying into manufacturing and also expanding its horizons into other minerals like coal, gold, etc. I am sure that under chairmanship of Shri Sumit Deb, NMDC will definitely grow exponentially.”

Sumit Deb on assuming charge said, “Under Shri N. Baijendra Kumar’s strong leadership, we established NMDC as a clear industry leader and positioned the Company for strategic diversification and continued profitable growth. I have been fortunate to have been associated with him and it has been a great learning experience. We are at the cusp of an incredible opportunity, and I am focused on driving growth and value creation. It will be an honour to lead this Navratna Company, and I look forward to continuing to execute our strategic plans and achieve our financial objectives.
