Birla Opus Paints COO shares how health, education, environment and welfare are shaping responsible and inclusive growth in India.

It is no secret that India’s growth story has moved beyond corporate boardrooms. Industries have expanded into tier-2 and tier-3 markets. Communities have become as integral a part of business success as factories. For businesses, progress, growth and success are no longer defined or measured solely by strong financial performance.
This dynamic is both exciting and humbling, and it is dictating how Corporate India must now operate. There is an opportunity to build a model of progress that is responsible, inclusive, and sustainable, with business impact extending to creating lasting social value and empowering the very communities that enable growth.
But is that strictly necessary? In the short term, businesses can perhaps survive without it. For a future-proof, future-ready business, manufacturing excellence must go hand-in-hand with social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and purposeful growth. Moreover, when industry grows with communities, it builds a legacy that extends far beyond business performance.
At Birla Opus Paints, part of the Aditya Birla Group, this belief is central to our approach to expansion and operations across India. As we build world-class manufacturing capabilities, we are equally committed to strengthening the social and environmental ecosystems around our plants. Our community welfare efforts are rooted in four key pillars: health, education, environment, and crisis welfare. These initiatives are designed to create meaningful impact across the tier-2/3 markets where we operate, ensuring that growth is both inclusive and responsible.
Healthy communities, stronger businesses
Strong communities are built on the foundation of health and well-being, and our health initiatives are designed to strengthen that by enabling access to essential healthcare and promoting preventive wellness. In Mahad, for instance, we organised a half-marathon that brought together employees and local residents to promote fitness and community engagement.
Similarly, in Gholagere village in Kharagpur, we strengthened essential infrastructure at the local primary school by installing water coolers, purification systems, and storage facilities, ensuring reliable access to safe drinking water and improved hygiene conditions. In addition, we donated an ambulance to the village, significantly enhancing emergency healthcare services for Gholagere and the surrounding communities.
At our Chamarajanagar unit, we successfully conducted comprehensive medical examinations for all employees and contractual workforce, reinforcing our unwavering commitment to workplace health and safety. This initiative emphasizes the critical role of preventive healthcare in strengthening industrial ecosystems. Such interventions reflect our belief that the well-being of our workforce and surrounding communities is integral to building resilient operations and achieving sustainable industrial growth.
Empowerment through education: Making quality education more available and accessible
Education remains one of the most powerful drivers of long-term community transformation, and our efforts in this domain focus on strengthening infrastructure and bridging gaps in access to quality learning. In Mahajanambakkam village, we supported 100 students by providing bookshelves, tables, and classroom furniture that enhance learning environments.
To address teacher shortages in the village school, we deployed three dedicated tutors fully remunerated by Birla Opus Paints. This initiative ensures continuity in education and improved learning outcomes for students.
In Kharagpur, we extended infrastructure support to Inda Boys School by installing water cooler and purifiers, as well as basic painting, to create a more conducive learning environment. We also strengthened community healthcare infrastructure, supporting Gholagere’s Primary Health Centre by providing essential equipment such as patient beds, seating, fans, and water coolers/purifiers. These initiatives aim to create holistic community ecosystems where education and basic services are accessible and reliable.
Safeguarding the environment: Tying business strategy to eco-consciousness
Responsible manufacturing must be built on a foundation of environmental stewardship. Across our plants and surrounding communities, we have undertaken a range of sustainability initiatives focused on renewable energy, water conservation, and biodiversity protection.
In villages near Panipat, we installed 16 solar high mast lights and 204 solar streetlights to improve safety and energy efficiency while promoting the adoption of renewable energy. We also installed solar panels at a government school near Panipat, supporting clean energy access and reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
Water conservation initiatives have been integral to this push. Our efforts have included pond rejuvenation in Azizullapur village near Panipat, as well as waterflow management and nala depth widening at our Mahad plant. These efforts aim to strengthen local water ecosystems and ensure responsible water usage.
Extensive plantation drives have also been undertaken across our locations. We have also undertaken large-scale tree plantations in collaboration with government departments such as the Labour Department of Haryana and the Department of Industries and Commerce in Karnataka.
Environmental awareness and conservation efforts have also been prioritised. These include an anti-poaching camp at the Punajanuru forest reserve near the Chamarajanagar plant, along with awareness sessions on plastic waste management and employee/worker participation in environmental initiatives led by state authorities. Together, these actions reinforce our commitment to protecting natural ecosystems while enabling sustainable industrial growth.
Investing in natural calamity mitigation and crisis welfare
Building resilient communities requires empowering individuals with skills, resources, and opportunities that enable long-term self-reliance. As part of our vocational training and women empowerment initiatives, we provided tailoring training to 40 women belonging to local self-help groups, empowering them with the skills and knowledge to build sustainable livelihoods and financial independence.
We also supported local infrastructure development by contributing to sports facilities at a football ground in Vidyasagar Industrial Park, encouraging youth engagement and community participation. Additionally, we provided traffic management infrastructure to local authorities in Kharagpur to enhance road safety and civic management. These initiatives reflect our commitment to strengthening community resilience and supporting local development in meaningful ways.
As India continues its journey toward becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse, the role of corporate India in shaping inclusive and sustainable progress becomes increasingly important. Businesses must move beyond transactional engagement and adopt a long-term vision that prioritises community wellbeing, environmental responsibility, and purposeful growth.
At Birla Opus Paints, our approach to manufacturing excellence is closely linked with our commitment to community impact. We believe that true growth is achieved when businesses and communities progress together. By investing in health, education, environmental sustainability, and community resilience across our plant locations, we aim to build a model of responsible growth that creates value far beyond business outcomes. Our vision is to build not just a strong and future-ready organisation, but a lasting legacy of positive impact – because, when manufacturing excellence is guided by purpose and a community-first mindset, it has the power to transform India’s growth story like nothing else.
