MUMBAI (India CSR): Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals Limited (GNFC) reported progress in energy efficiency, greenhouse-gas intensity and water conservation during FY 2025-26, according to its latest Annual Report and Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR). The fertilizer and chemicals company said its sustainability strategy combines renewable-energy adoption, process optimisation, waste recovery, water conservation, biodiversity protection, workplace safety and community development.

Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

GNFC has captive renewable-energy assets comprising a 14 MW AC solar plant at Charanka Solar Park and 21 MW of wind-power capacity in Kutch. The wind portfolio includes a 9 MW plant at Lathedi and a 12 MW plant at Shikarpur. The company’s renewable-energy consumption increased to 159,606.57 GJ in FY 2025-26 from 154,095.03 GJ a year earlier. At the same time, total energy consumption declined by around 9.4%, while physical energy intensity improved from 7.50 GJ to 7.20 GJ per tonne of production.

GNFC said it has pursued energy conservation through LED lighting, waste-heat recovery, pump and utility-system optimisation, use of high-pressure natural gas in process feed systems, and other technology upgrades. The company also has two production facilities designated as Designated Consumers under the Government of India’s Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme – its Urea plant and ANP plant.

Emissions Performance

GNFC’s Scope 1 emissions, which arise directly from its operations, declined to 1,684,415.68 tCO2e in FY 2025-26 from 1,903,591.56 tCO2e in FY 2024-25. Scope 2 emissions, associated with purchased electricity, increased to 146,769.09 tCO2e from 116,606.21 tCO2e. However, the company’s combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions intensity improved to 0.63 tCO2e per tonne of production, from 0.66 tCO2e per tonne in the preceding year. GNFC also disclosed Scope 3 emissions of 875.89 tCO2e for FY 2025-26, covering employee commuting and business travel by air and road.

Water, Waste and Circularity

Total water consumption declined to 15.02 million kilolitres in FY 2025-26 from 15.56 million kilolitres in FY 2024-25. Total water withdrawal was 14.97 million kilolitres, largely sourced from surface water. GNFC reported that it has not implemented a zero-liquid-discharge mechanism. Its total water discharge stood at 4.11 million kilolitres, including treated discharge to surface water and seawater. The company said it continues to pursue groundwater recharge, wastewater recycling and the reuse of process materials.

The company generated 20,162.22 metric tonnes of waste during FY 2025-26, marginally lower than the previous year. It reported recycling 5,484.35 MT and reusing 4,186.62 MT of waste. Hazardous waste is collected and stored at designated facilities, with disposal and handling undertaken under authorisations issued by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board. The company also follows Extended Producer Responsibility requirements for plastic packaging and reported recycling 5,593 MT of plastic packaging at end-of-life during FY 2025-26.

Biodiversity, Governance and Social Sustainability

GNFC said nearly 42% of its plant area is maintained as green belt, including its Oxygen Park. Its environmental initiatives include Miyawaki plantations, rainwater harvesting, biodiversity protection and awareness programmes. The company reported zero fatalities, no high-consequence injuries and no major incidents related to chemical leakage or toxic-gas release during FY 2025-26. It conducted 118 training programmes for employees and 116 for workers covering environment, safety, energy conservation, occupational health and related areas. On the social side, GNFC’s CSR programmes focus on education, healthcare, livelihoods, women empowerment and rural development. Its newly launched “50 Viksit Villages, Vision 2047” initiative aims to transform 50 villages into self-reliant, future-ready communities and target an estimated 50,000 to 75,000 rural lives.
