First phase includes 12 schools in Udupi and around 20 in Dakshina Kannada, with focus on KPS schools, STEM labs and smart classrooms

UDUPI (India CSR): The Karnataka government has begun a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)-supported programme to improve infrastructure and learning facilities in 1,000 government schools, with 12 schools in Udupi district and around 20 schools in Dakshina Kannada identified for development in the first phase.

The initiative aims to use corporate and community support to strengthen public school infrastructure, including classrooms, computer laboratories, libraries, teacher training, transportation facilities and technology-enabled learning.

Implementation will be reviewed at the district level under the leadership of deputy commissioners, while officials from the Education Department have also been assigned responsibilities under the programme.

District-Level Planning

A meeting chaired by Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T K recently discussed the development of government schools into Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) under Community and Corporate Social Responsibility guidelines.

The meeting considered a proposal to develop one model school in every village through CSR participation and reviewed the requirements for converting identified institutions into Karnataka Public Schools.

The district administration also reviewed the functioning of its CSR cell and indicated that more organisations had shown interest in supporting government school development.

KPS Schools Priority

In the initial phase, priority is being given to Karnataka Public Schools identified by the School Education and Literacy Department.

According to the plan, CSR support will cover both development of KPS institutions and their maintenance for the next three years.

The maintenance component is significant because CSR-backed infrastructure projects can face sustainability challenges when funding is concentrated only on construction or installation.

The source does not provide the estimated financial requirement for upgrading each school or the overall CSR funding target for the 1,000-school programme.

STEM and Digital

The proposed school upgrades include computer laboratories for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education, along with libraries and teacher training.

CSR support may also be used to sponsor guest teachers and provide transportation facilities to students.

Smart classrooms are expected to be established according to individual school requirements. The programme also proposes AI-enabled interactive classrooms as part of its digital education component.

These interventions are intended to improve both physical infrastructure and the learning environment in government schools.

Monitoring Structure

Monitoring committees have been formed at different administrative levels to oversee implementation of the programme.

At the state level, the Chief Minister will chair a monitoring committee comprising 20 members, including the Deputy Chief Minister and ministers handling the Education Department and other departments.

A state-level CSR cell has also been constituted under the chairmanship of the department commissioner. District-level CSR cells will function under the respective deputy commissioners.

This structure is expected to provide coordination between government departments, district administrations and corporate contributors.

Corporate Participation

Companies and organisations interested in supporting the programme can register their interest and provide details through an online mechanism.

The initiative seeks to connect CSR contributors with specific school infrastructure and education requirements identified by the government.

However, the available information does not identify the companies that have committed funding, the size of CSR contributions received or the school-wise project costs.

Education Impact

The programme could expand the role of CSR in public education beyond basic infrastructure by including digital learning, teacher support, transportation and maintenance.

For stronger transparency and impact assessment, future disclosures should include the total CSR funding mobilised, participating companies, school-wise allocations, beneficiary numbers, implementation timelines and measurable indicators such as attendance, enrolment and learning outcomes.
