We plan our vacations months in advance.
But when it comes to money, many of us follow a simple approach:
Earn. Spend. Invest whatever is left.
And somewhere along the way, we started treating investing as financial planning.
It isn’t.
Start With the Goal
The first question is usually:
“Where should I invest?”
Mutual funds? Stocks? FD? Gold?
But perhaps the better question is:
“What am I trying to achieve with my money?”
An investment is a tool.
Your financial goal is the destination.
Build the Foundation First
Before investing, you need to understand your financial position:
– How much do you earn?
– Where does your money go?
– How much can you save?
– What are your liabilities?
– What goals are you working towards?
Then comes protection.
An emergency fund, health insurance and appropriate life insurance help protect the financial foundation you’re building.
Then Comes Investing
Once your goals are clear, investing becomes more meaningful.
Rs 1 lakh needed for a house in three years is different from ₹1 lakh invested for retirement 25 years away.
Different goal. Different timeline. Potentially different strategy.
That’s why there isn’t one investment that is perfect for everyone.
Your Plan Should Evolve
Your financial priorities change as your life changes.
At 25, it may be about building wealth.
At 35, it may include a home, family and children’s education.
At 50, retirement may become the priority.
Your financial plan should evolve with you.

I believe financial planning isn’t about looking at SIPs, insurance or investments separately.
They are all pieces of the same financial picture.
Ultimately, financial planning is about knowing:
Where am I today?
Where do I want to go?
And is my money taking me there?
We spend so much time planning the life we want.
Maybe it’s time we planned the money that will help us live it.
