A closer look at how Jubilant Pharmova’s CSR initiatives impacted thousands of lives across rural India, according to its latest annual report

NEW DELHI (India CSR): In many parts of rural India, access to basic healthcare, quality education, and stable livelihoods remains a daily challenge. For families living near industrial zones or in remote villages, even small interventions can bring meaningful change. It is in this context that corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts often play a quiet but important role.

Jubilant Pharmova Limited, a global pharmaceutical company with operations in India and abroad, has outlined its CSR work for the financial year 2024–25 in its latest annual report. The report provides a detailed account of how the company allocated funds, the areas it focused on, and the number of people reached through its initiatives.

According to Jubilant Pharmova’s annual report, Jubilant Pharmova spent a total of Rs 1.36 crore on CSR activities during FY 2024–25. The spending slightly exceeded its statutory requirement, reflecting a continued focus on community development around its operational areas.

The annual report states that Jubilant Pharmova’s average net profit for the relevant period stood at Rs 67.86 crore. Based on this, the required CSR expenditure for FY 2024–25 was calculated at Rs 135.73 lakhs (Rs 1.36 crore).

Book Launch Ceremony

Against this obligation, Jubilant Pharmova reported an actual CSR spend of Rs 1.36 crore, resulting in an excess of Rs 0.27 lakhs. As per regulatory provisions, this excess amount can be carried forward and adjusted in future years.

The report also highlights that Jubilant Pharmova did not incur any administrative overheads or impact assessment costs during the year. This suggests that the entire CSR budget was directed toward program implementation, primarily through its implementing agency, the Jubilant Bhartia Foundation.

Implementation Through Jubilant Bhartia Foundation

Jubilant Pharmova carries out its CSR initiatives through the Jubilant Bhartia Foundation (JBF), which acts as Jubilant Pharmova’s social development arm. Established to manage and execute community programs, the foundation follows a collaborative approach involving government bodies, local communities, and private stakeholders.

According to the report, the foundation operates under a structured governance system led by the Board-level CSR and Sustainability Committee. This ensures oversight and alignment with both regulatory requirements and Jubilant Pharmova’s broader sustainability goals.

The foundation focuses mainly on three key areas: healthcare, education, and livelihood development, while also supporting social entrepreneurship initiatives.

Healthcare Initiatives: Focus on Last-Mile Access

Healthcare remained one of the primary focus areas of Jubilant Pharmova’s CSR activities in FY 2024–25. The report highlights that Jubilant Pharmova reached over 22,693 individuals through its healthcare programs.

These initiatives were implemented under the broader framework of accessible and preventive healthcare. Jubilant Pharmova used a combination of mobile medical units and static healthcare centers to reach underserved populations, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.

According to the annual report, these services were concentrated around key operational regions such as Roorkee in Uttarakhand and Nanjangud in Karnataka. The programs aimed to provide basic medical consultations, diagnostic support, and health awareness.

The report also notes an increased focus on nutrition awareness and preventive care. Local health workers were engaged to educate communities about hygiene, balanced diets, and early detection of illnesses. This approach reflects a shift from only treatment-based services to preventive healthcare.

Education Initiatives: Strengthening Rural Schools

Education formed the second major pillar of Jubilant Pharmova’s CSR strategy. Through its programs, Jubilant Pharmova worked to improve the quality of learning in government schools located in rural areas.

The annual report states that CSR initiatives in education covered 30 schools and impacted more than 5,666 students and teachers during the year.

Jubilant Pharmova introduced digital learning tools through initiatives such as HP Digital and Edulab programs, which aim to bridge the digital divide in rural education. These programs provide access to computers, digital content, and modern teaching methods.

According to the report, the focus was not only on infrastructure but also on enhancing the overall learning environment. Teachers were supported with training, and efforts were made to make classrooms more interactive and engaging.

The introduction of digital education tools is seen as a step toward preparing students for future opportunities, especially in a technology-driven world.

Livelihood Programs: Supporting Economic Independence

Another key area of CSR intervention for Jubilant Pharmova in FY 2024–25 was livelihood generation. The report highlights that 1,427 individuals benefited from various skill development and income-generation programs.

These initiatives primarily targeted women and rural youth, aiming to create sustainable employment opportunities. Skill development programs were designed to help participants either secure jobs or start their own small businesses.

One of the notable initiatives mentioned in the report is the uniform stitching centre in Nanjangud, where local women are engaged in producing uniforms. This initiative provides a steady source of income and promotes financial independence.

The report emphasizes that such programs not only improve household income but also contribute to social empowerment, especially for women in rural areas.

Support for Social Entrepreneurship

In addition to direct community programs, Jubilant Pharmova also supported social innovation through its CSR efforts. The annual report highlights the role of the BHARAT IMPACT initiative, which focuses on promoting social entrepreneurship.

During FY 2024–25, the initiative supported 15 social start-ups through incubation and mentorship programs. These start-ups are working on innovative solutions in areas such as education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability.

The program is implemented in collaboration with institutions such as the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A). It provides selected entrepreneurs with training, funding support, and access to networks.

According to the report, this initiative aims to create long-term social impact by supporting scalable and sustainable solutions.

Governance and Transparency

The annual report also sheds light on the governance framework behind CSR activities. Jubilant Pharmova maintains a structured approach with defined policies, regular monitoring, and board-level oversight.

Jubilant Pharmova follows established reporting standards and ensures transparency in its disclosures. Its CSR activities are aligned with broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

The report mentions that Jubilant Pharmova continues to follow global reporting practices and maintains external assurance for its sustainability disclosures. This reflects an effort to maintain credibility and accountability in its operations.

Broader Impact and Community Reach

While the total CSR spending of Rs 136.00 lakhs may appear modest compared to Jubilant Pharmova’s overall revenue, the report highlights that the impact has been significant at the community level.

Healthcare services reached tens of thousands of individuals. Education programs improved access to digital learning for thousands of students. Livelihood initiatives helped individuals gain skills and income opportunities.

The annual report suggests that Jubilant Pharmova’s approach focuses on depth rather than scale, with targeted interventions in specific regions where it operates.
