Introducing a paradigm shift that embraces a sustainable relocation ecosystem, paving the way for a harmonious coexistence between people, nature, and progress.

By Rahul Pillai

Every industry is making progress toward a sustainable and inclusive future, and the relocation industry is no exception. One of my recent reads probed me to ponder and resonated well about the wide array of possibilities that this industry can consider for sustainably conducting business. At present, this seems like an uphill task considering the unorganized nature of the industry, but a number of key practices can help reduce its environmental impact enormously.

As the climate crisis continues to unfold, businesses have been looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact. Environment-friendly practices can help reduce the carbon footprint of the relocation process by offering eco-friendly solutions such as using recycled materials and participating in carbon offsetting programs. They can also help to reduce the amount of waste generated during a move by offering packing materials that can be reused or recycled. Having spent over two decades in this industry, I believe it is imperative to make such green choices, even in the relocation and moving industry.

In order to contribute to the sustainability of ecosystems, I have outlined 6 practices that can make a significant change.

1. Use of recyclable, biodegradable and eco-friendly packing material

The relocation and moving industry is one of the biggest users of plastic and other non-recyclable materials that are used in the moving process. Companies can switch to cardboard and plastic taping, biodegradable packing peanuts, and recycled boxes. By using these materials, they will reduce their reliance on more harmful packing materials like Styrofoam.

Cardboard boxes and other packaging materials can be easily recycled or reused. Additionally, using materials such as newspaper and bubble wrap for cushioning can help to reduce the amount of plastic that is used.

2. Use of fuel-efficient and electric vehicles (EV) to reduce carbon footprint

Another important way relocation companies can become more sustainable is by minimising their transportation emissions. Organisations can switch to electric vehicles in order to reduce their carbon footprint. It is time for companies to invest in newer fleet vehicles with better fuel-efficiency.

3. Go the paperless way

If each organisation across industries takes the digital route to communicate internally as well as externally, it can save tonnes of paper. Various online tools and platforms can be leveraged to enable businesses to run smoothly in a paperless manner.

4. Compact packaging to avoid space wastage

Maximum utilisation of space by avoiding unnecessary filler materials is a small step towards sustainability. All items should be neatly wrapped and put in boxes. This will save both fuel and money eventually.

Reduce wastage of space in the carrier. This will accommodate more boxes, leading to less fuel consumption and thereby reducing the carbon footprint.

5. Choose your partner wisely

It is best to vet a partner who embraces sustainable practises. Choosing vendors, suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors who adhere to sustainable practises will contribute to creating a conducive environment for sustainability to flourish. It is necessary to train them on the same and work together to improve their environmental performance as well.

6. Factors to bear in mind in the process:

Whilst sustainability practises are becoming increasingly important, one cannot deny the fact that they require huge investments. Investing in sustainable practises can have a wide variety of advantages, both for the environment and for businesses. But, just like any other investment, it requires careful planning and consideration.

When it comes to investing in sustainability, there are several important factors to consider. Businesses should take the time to assess their purpose, potential return on investment, best implementation strategies, and timeline for investments in sustainability practises. This will ensure that their investments in sustainability and both beneficial and cost-effective.

Keeping all these in mind, it may seem daunting at this point to move towards sustainability, but professional movers are slowly beginning to understand its value. They are taking baby steps to ensure their operations are as sustainable as possible.

With the help of sustainable relocation services, and by opting for a sustainable relocation partner, you, as a consumer, can make your move greener and help reduce the environmental impact of the relocation industry as well.

So how green is your organisation?
