The India CSR Awards are annual awards that recognize and honor outstanding CSR initiatives in India
NEW DELHI (India CSR): United Breweries Limited (UBL) has been awarded the prestigious India CSR Award 2022 for its project “Participatory water conservation through rejuvenation of water bodies”.
The award recognizes the company’s efforts in promoting water conservation and environmental sustainability in the Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. The project saw the restoration of 7 lakes in 4 villages, resulting in an increase in groundwater levels in the region. UBL also removed an invasive shrub species and planted over 2,000 native tree saplings to enhance green cover and biodiversity.
The award was presented at the 13th India CSR Leadership Summit, where UBL was honored by Chief Guest Shri R.K. Sinha, a former Rajya Sabha Member, in the presence of notable dignitaries such as Dr. Shalini Rajneesh and Rusen Kumar. The 11th India CSR Awards held in New Delhi on December 17, 2022.
UBL’s winning project is a testament to its commitment to environmental sustainability and its efforts to make a positive impact on the communities surrounding its manufacturing facilities. The company’s dedication to promoting citizen-led governance for water resources and its focus on water stewardship is a great example for other organizations to follow.
United Breweries is committed to water stewardship and has taken action to address water concerns in the Thiruvallur district where they have two breweries. In 2019, a need assessment was conducted to identify gaps in water resources and the results led to a project on “Participatory Water Conservation through Rejuvenation of Water Bodies.”
Brief of winning CSR project
UBL took up the project on ‘Participatory water conservation through rejuvenation of water bodies’ in Thiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu. With the launch of this project, with the support of the implementation partner and active participation from the local community: 7 lakes in 4 villages have been fully restored and are now brimming with water. Over the years, groundwater levels are also likely to rise due to this initiative in the region. In addition to lake rejuvenation, an invasive shrub species Prosopis Juliflora was also removed from 100 acres of common land. This plant is an invasive species that consumes water and harms entire ecosystems posing a threat to groundwater, degrading biodiversity, and increasing malarial transmission. Post removal of Prosopis Juliflora, they planted more than 2,000 tree saplings of native species to enhance green cover and improve biodiversity in the area.
