Teachers Day: A Celebration of the Noble Profession

Introduction

Teachers are the pillars of society who shape the minds and futures of students. They impart knowledge, skills, values, and wisdom to their learners, and guide them towards their goals and aspirations. Teachers are not only educators, but also mentors, role models, friends, and inspirations for their students. They dedicate their lives to nurturing and empowering the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators.

To honour and appreciate the invaluable contributions of teachers, Teachers Day is celebrated every year on September 5 in India. This date marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a renowned philosopher, scholar, and the second President of India. He was also an exemplary teacher who made significant contributions to education and philosophy. He believed that teachers play a paramount role in shaping the future of a nation and should be celebrated.

History of Teachers Day

The history of Teachers Day in India dates back to 1962 when Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became the President of India. On his birthday, September 5, his former students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday. In response, Dr. Radhakrishnan suggested that instead of celebrating his birthday, the day should be dedicated to honouring teachers and the noble profession of teaching. He said, “Instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers’ Day.”

Since then, September 5 has been observed as Teachers Day in India and many other countries. On this day, students express their gratitude to their teachers through various activities, such as giving them cards, flowers, and gifts, and organizing cultural programs and events in schools and colleges.

Significance of Teachers Day

Teachers Day is a special occasion to express our gratitude and appreciation for the educators who play a vital role in shaping our lives. It reminds us of the pivotal role teachers play in molding the minds and futures of students. Celebrating Teachers Day serves as an inspiration for students to value education and the guidance they receive from their teachers. It encourages students to strive for excellence and develop a sense of respect for their educators.

Teachers Day also provides an opportunity for teachers to reflect on their work and achievements, and receive recognition and feedback from their students and peers. It motivates teachers to continue their efforts to improve their teaching methods and enhance their professional development. It also fosters a positive relationship between teachers and students, based on mutual trust and respect.
