Prime Minister says new opportunities in startups, innovation, skilling, aviation and drones are reshaping employment and entrepreneurship for India’s youth
NEW DELHI (India CSR): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India has achieved an unprecedented expansion in social security coverage, with the number of people covered rising from 25 crore before 2014 to nearly 100 crore within the past decade. Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Independence Day, the Prime Minister said that the vision of a developed India can be realised only when the benefits of development reach the last person in society. “Before 2014, only 25 crore people had social security cover,” the Prime Minister said. He added, “Only 25 crores in the last 5-7 decades; we have provided social security cover to 100 crore countrymen within a decade.”
Social Security at the Centre of Viksit Bharat
Prime Minister Modi underlined that social security and welfare support are essential pillars of the country’s journey towards Viksit Bharat. He said development must not remain limited to cities, privileged groups or selected sectors. Its real success should be measured by whether it reaches poor families, workers, farmers, senior citizens and people living at the margins. The expansion of social security cover reflects a wider effort to strengthen the economic and social safety net for citizens. It is aimed at providing greater protection against health-related expenses, income insecurity and other vulnerabilities that can push families into financial distress.
The Prime Minister’s remarks placed welfare delivery at the centre of India’s development model. The focus, he said, remains on ensuring that government support reaches citizens directly and efficiently.
Ayushman Bharat Support for Senior Citizens
The Prime Minister also referred to the Ayushman Bharat scheme, highlighting healthcare protection for elderly citizens. Under the scheme, persons above the age of 70 are receiving free treatment of up to Rs. 5 lakh. For many elderly people and their families, healthcare costs can become a serious financial burden. The health coverage is expected to provide much-needed relief, particularly for households that may otherwise struggle to afford major medical treatment.
The Prime Minister’s reference to the scheme reinforced the government’s emphasis on making healthcare support accessible to vulnerable sections of society. It also reflects the wider approach of linking social security with dignity, health and financial protection.
Startups Creating Jobs, Not Just Businesses
Prime Minister Modi said the past decade has created new pathways of employment and entrepreneurship for the country’s youth. He noted that the Startup India initiative has enabled the growth of more than 2.5 lakh registered startups. These startups, he said, are not merely creating opportunities for their founders. They are also generating jobs for others and encouraging young Indians to become innovators, entrepreneurs and employers.
India’s startup ecosystem has emerged as an important part of the country’s economic transformation. Young founders are working across technology, fintech, healthcare, education, agriculture, clean energy, logistics, manufacturing and digital services. The Prime Minister’s address highlighted the growing importance of entrepreneurship as a source of employment. It signals a shift from a traditional job-seeking mindset towards a larger culture of job creation, innovation and enterprise-building.
Innovation Fund to Strengthen Youth Potential
The Prime Minister also highlighted the role of the ₹1 lakh crore Innovation Fund in creating new opportunities for young people. The fund is expected to support innovation-led growth and encourage emerging ideas, enterprises and technologies. Innovation is increasingly becoming a key driver of economic progress. It helps businesses improve productivity, solve public challenges and create services that respond to changing social needs.
For young entrepreneurs, innovators and skilled professionals, policy support can help reduce barriers to experimentation and enterprise creation. The Prime Minister said such initiatives are opening up new avenues in employment, skilling and entrepreneurship.
Skill India and Digital India Expand Possibilities
The Prime Minister referred to Skill India and Digital India as major initiatives that have widened opportunities for the youth. Skill development is crucial in a changing economy, where new technologies and industries require specialised capabilities. Digital India has also transformed access to services, information, markets and employment opportunities. It has enabled young people from smaller cities and rural areas to participate more actively in the digital economy.
The combination of skills, technology and entrepreneurship is creating a new generation of workers and innovators. This includes people who can build businesses, work in emerging sectors and access markets beyond their immediate geography.
Space, Aviation and Drones Create New Careers
Prime Minister Modi said the opening up of the space and aviation sectors, along with the National Drone Policy, is creating fresh opportunities for skilled youth. India’s growing space sector has opened new possibilities in satellite technology, data services, engineering, research and advanced manufacturing. The aviation sector is also expanding through new airports, additional air routes and growing demand for services related to aircraft operations.
The Prime Minister pointed to aircraft manufacturing, maintenance and overhaul activities as important sources of employment. These sectors require trained technicians, engineers, pilots, ground staff, designers, software professionals and other skilled workers. The drone sector is similarly creating opportunities in agriculture, surveying, logistics, disaster response, infrastructure inspection and public services. As drone-based applications grow, demand is expected to rise for trained operators, maintenance professionals, software experts and data specialists.
Development Must Reach the Last Person
The central message of the Prime Minister’s Independence Day address was that India’s growth must be inclusive. He reiterated that the benefits of development should reach the last person in the country. The expansion of social security, healthcare support for senior citizens, startup growth, skilling initiatives and new-sector employment opportunities were presented as connected elements of this larger national vision.
As India moves towards Viksit Bharat, the Prime Minister’s address placed people at the heart of development. The goal is not only economic growth but also greater security, dignity, opportunity and participation for every citizen.
