Gross NPAs stood at Rs. 73,452.46 crore and the gross NPA ratio was 1.49%.

NEW DELHI (India CSR): State Bank of India (SBI) reported write-offs of Rs. 17,803.22 crore during FY2025-26, according to the NPA movement disclosure in its Annual Report 2025-26. The amount is shown under “write-offs other than technical/prudential write-offs.” The bank reported nil technical/prudential write-offs for the year in the same disclosure. SBI’s gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) stood at Rs. 73,452.46 crore as of March 31, 2026, compared with Rs. 76,880.20 crore a year earlier. The gross NPA ratio was 1.49%, against 1.82% as of March 31, 2025. Net NPAs stood at Rs. 18,830.14 crore as of March 31, 2026, compared with Rs. 19,666.92 crore in the previous year. The net NPA ratio was 0.39%, against 0.47% a year earlier.

PSBs Write Off ₹ 91,261 Crore in FY2024-25; 10-Year Total Crosses ₹ 12.08 Lakh Crore

It is to be noted that Public sector banks (PSBs) wrote off loans worth Rs. 91,261 crore in FY2024-25, according to provisional Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data submitted by the Ministry of Finance in the Rajya Sabha. The figures were presented in response to Rajya Sabha Unstarred Question No. 244, answered on July 22, 2025. The Ministry stated that PSBs wrote off an aggregate Rs. 12,08,828 crore between FY2015-16 and FY2024-25.

The FY2024-25 write-off amount was lower than Rs. 1,14,622 crore in FY2023-24, but it remains a significant indicator of the stressed-loan challenge faced by the banking sector. Importantly, the government clarified that writing off a loan does not mean the borrower has been given a waiver. The borrower remains liable to repay, while banks continue recovery action through available legal channels.

NPA Reduction Details

SBI’s financial-statement disclosure records total additions to gross NPAs of Rs. 22,677.85 crore during FY2025-26. Total reductions in gross NPAs were Rs. 26,105.59 crore. These reductions included Rs. 2,556.93 crore through upgradation, Rs. 5,745.44 crore through recoveries excluding recoveries from upgraded accounts, and Rs. 17,803.22 crore through write-offs other than technical/prudential write-offs. The closing gross NPA figure of Rs. 73,452.46 crore is derived from the disclosed opening balance, additions and reductions for the year. The annual report also presents a rounded figure of Rs. 73,452 crore in its stressed-assets management section.

Provisioning Reported

SBI made provisions of Rs. 15,422 crore for non-performing assets during FY2025-26, compared with Rs. 14,418 crore in FY2024-25. The bank’s provisioning coverage ratio, including Advance Under Collection Account (AUCA), was 91.97% as of March 31, 2026, compared with 92.08% a year earlier. The report defines AUCA as accounts that have been fully provided for and transferred to a separate head called Advance Under Collection Account. SBI reported an AUCA balance of Rs. 1,60,914.01 crore as of March 31, 2026, compared with Rs. 1,71,433.33 crore at the end of the preceding year.

Recovery And Transfers

SBI reported recoveries of Rs. 10,054 crore in AUCA during FY2025-26, compared with Rs. 8,002 crore in FY2024-25. The annual report separately records cash recoveries and upgradations of Rs. 9,429 crore during FY2025-26. During the year, SBI assigned 355 stressed accounts with principal outstanding of Rs. 5,204.95 crore to asset reconstruction companies and permitted transferees.
