NEW DELHI (India CSR): In a major global development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced that India has achieved its clean energy target of generating 50 per cent of power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources — five years ahead of the 2030 deadline.
Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum in New Delhi, Modi said India’s milestone demonstrates its commitment to climate action and its emergence as a leader in the global energy transition. “The world had set 2030 as the target year. India has achieved this in 2025 itself,” the Prime Minister declared, adding that this achievement proves India’s speed, scale, and scope in delivering sustainable solutions.
The Prime Minister noted that India has rapidly expanded its renewable energy capacity over the past decade. “In 2014, solar PV manufacturing capacity was just 2.5 GW. Today, India has crossed 100 GW, marking a historic leap,” he said. He added that India is not just meeting its domestic needs but also positioning itself as an exporter of green technology.
Calling it a “quantum jump” in the global fight against climate change, Modi said India’s progress was not driven by compulsion but by conviction. “Atmanirbhar Bharat is not only about self-reliance in manufacturing but also about leading in sustainable growth,” he remarked.
He emphasised that India’s leadership in renewable energy, combined with reforms in the energy sector, will create new opportunities for industries and employment, while strengthening the global effort to combat climate challenges. “India’s speed in delivering green energy, its scale of execution, and the scope of its ambition are unmatched,” he said.
The announcement comes amid global concerns over slow progress in meeting climate goals. Experts say India’s achievement could act as a catalyst for other nations to accelerate their commitments under the Paris Agreement.
The Prime Minister underlined that India’s journey reflects its broader philosophy of Reform, Perform, Transform. “India today stands not as a follower but as a torchbearer of sustainable development,” Modi said, adding that the country will continue to push ahead in areas like green hydrogen, battery storage, and advanced clean technologies.
