New Delhi: The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is implementing a Waste to Energy (WTE) Program to generate biogas, BioCNG, and electricity from urban, industrial, and agricultural waste. The program has a budget of Rs 600 crore for the period 2021-22 to 2025-26, and it provides central financial assistance to interested developers who set up WTE plants.
In addition, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is promoting the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative, which aims to set up 5,000 BioCNG plants by 2023-24 to produce 15 MMT of BioCNG from waste materials.
The SATAT initiative encourages entrepreneurs to set up BioCNG plants and sell the BioCNG to Oil Marketing Companies as automotive fuel. As of October 31, 2022, 3,694 letters of intent have been issued for BioCNG capacity addition of 23,868 tons per day.
