Five individuals, including K B Singh, executive director of GAIL, arrested amid ongoing investigations in Delhi, Noida, and Visakhapatnam
NEW DELHI (India CSR): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested K B Singh, the executive director (ED) (projects) of Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL), and four other individuals on September 5 in an alleged bribery case involving Rs 50 lakh. The arrest raises serious concerns about corporate governance within GAIL, a state-run entity.
The Arrests
K B Singh was arrested along with four others, one of whom has been identified as Surender Kumar, the director of Vadodara-based Advance Infrastructures. The identities of the remaining three individuals have not yet been disclosed in preliminary reports.
These arrests come at a time when corporate governance is already a hot topic in India, particularly for state-run organizations like GAIL.
Ongoing Investigations
Search operations in relation to the alleged bribery are actively underway in various locations, including Delhi, Noida, and Visakhapatnam. People close to the developments have stated that these arrests and ongoing investigations are expected to shed light on further lapses in corporate governance and ethical business conduct within the organization.
The Case
Sources who spoke to PTI indicate that the bribery case revolves around illicit money transactions favouring certain contractors involved in gas pipeline projects. Specifically, the bribe was allegedly paid in connection with two GAIL pipeline projects – Srikakulam to Angul and Vijaypur to Auraiya. The CBI initiated the operation on September 4 following input about the bribe exchange and subsequently made the arrests.
Market Impact
The news of the arrests had an immediate impact on GAIL’s stock prices. The shares, which were trading at a four-year high, lost their gains around 2:45 pm, shortly after the news of the executive director’s arrest broke. As of 2:58 pm, the stock was almost flat at Rs 123 apiece on the NSE.
Implications for Corporate Governance
These arrests raise alarming questions about the state of corporate governance within GAIL and other state-run enterprises. With top-level executives involved in corruption allegations, stakeholders are now calling for a thorough review of governance policies within the organization.
India CSR could not independently verify the developments. Further details are awaited as the CBI continues its investigation into the case.
