NEW DELHI (India CSR): For many families living in India’s coastal and port-linked regions, access to quality education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities can significantly influence their future. While ports drive economic activity and trade, the communities surrounding them often continue to face challenges related to healthcare access, educational opportunities, and infrastructure development. In recent years, corporate social responsibility initiatives have emerged as an important tool for addressing these gaps and supporting inclusive growth. During the financial year 2025-26, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) expanded its social investment efforts, directing substantial resources toward community welfare and sustainable development programmes across the country.

According to the company’s Integrated Annual Report 2025-26, APSEZ spent Rs 199 crore on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities during the year, marking a significant increase from the previous financial year. The report highlights that the investment focused on key areas such as education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods, climate action, and community infrastructure. Implemented through the Adani Foundation, these initiatives reached thousands of beneficiaries across multiple states. From supporting school education and mobile healthcare services to strengthening women-led enterprises and conserving coastal ecosystems, the programmes were designed to create long-term social impact. The annual report states that Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited’s CSR strategy is aligned with its broader vision of combining business growth with community development and environmental responsibility.

CSR Spending Far Exceeds Statutory Requirement

Under the Companies Act, 2013, companies meeting specified financial thresholds are required to spend at least 2% of their average net profits on CSR activities.

According to the annual report, Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd’s statutory CSR obligation for FY2025-26 was Rs 24.19 crore. However, the company’s actual CSR expenditure reached Rs 199 crore, significantly exceeding the mandatory requirement.

The report highlights that Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone generated an excess CSR expenditure of approximately Rs 130 crore, which may be carried forward for adjustment in future years as permitted under CSR regulations.

This substantial increase in spending reflects Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd’s broader focus on expanding social investments beyond compliance requirements.

According to the annual report, APSEZ allocated Rs 127.82 crore toward education-related programmes, accounting for the largest share of total CSR expenditure.

The report highlights that education initiatives focused on improving learning outcomes, strengthening school infrastructure, expanding access to quality education, and supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

One of the key programmes mentioned in the report is Project Utthan, which works to improve foundational literacy and numeracy among students studying in government schools.

The report states that 74,595 students from 1,267 educational institutions participated in these visits during FY2025-26. The programme is designed to help students gain practical insights into different industries and career opportunities.

The annual report also highlights the role of Adani Vidya Mandirs, which provide free quality education to children from economically weaker backgrounds. Several schools supported by the Adani Foundation reported strong academic outcomes during the year.

According to the report, the foundation’s education ecosystem currently includes 43 schools and multiple educational partnerships across different states.

Healthcare remained another major focus area under Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd’s CSR strategy.

According to the annual report, Adani Ports and SEZ spent Rs 17.85 crore on healthcare programmes during FY2025-26.

The report highlights that healthcare interventions were primarily aimed at improving access to medical services in rural and remote areas where healthcare infrastructure remains limited.

One of the most significant initiatives is the Mobile Healthcare Unit (MHCU) programme.

According to the annual report, nine mobile healthcare units were operational during the year, serving 304 villages and reaching more than 1.66 lakh beneficiaries. Around 60% of the beneficiaries were women.

These mobile units provide primary healthcare services, medical consultations, health screenings, and medicines directly within communities.

During FY2025-26, approximately 7,143 individuals underwent eye examinations, while 3,512 eyeglasses were distributed under the programme.

In addition, multispecialty and general health camps were organised across several locations, benefiting more than 21,000 patients.

According to the annual report, Adani Ports and SEZ spent Rs 11.46 crore on livelihood development initiatives during FY2025-26.

The report highlights that these programmes focused on enhancing income opportunities, supporting entrepreneurship, strengthening farming practices, and empowering women-led enterprises.

Skill development and vocational training initiatives were conducted to improve employability among youth living in communities surrounding Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd’s operational areas.

Adani Ports and SEZ also worked with women’s self-help groups and small enterprises to promote economic participation and financial independence.

According to the report, these interventions were designed to create sustainable income opportunities rather than short-term financial assistance.

Agriculture-related programmes provided technical support and training to farmers to improve productivity and strengthen local economies.

Community Infrastructure Development Supports Rural Areas

Community infrastructure development accounted for another significant portion of CSR spending.

According to the annual report, APSEZ allocated Rs 26.11 crore toward infrastructure projects aimed at improving living conditions in local communities.

The report states that investments were directed toward drinking water facilities, sanitation infrastructure, roads, community assets, and other public utility projects.

These projects were implemented primarily in rural and coastal regions where infrastructure gaps continue to affect daily life.

One of the notable initiatives highlighted in the report is Adani Mangal Seva.

The programme supports newly married women with disabilities through long-term financial assistance. Under the scheme, a fixed deposit of Rs 10 lakh is created for each beneficiary for a period of ten years.

The annual report states that the interest generated from the deposit provides regular financial support that can be used for healthcare, education, and household needs.

According to the report, 500 beneficiaries have been enrolled under the initiative so far.

The programme is aimed at promoting financial security, dignity, and social inclusion among women with disabilities.

Climate Action and Environmental Conservation

Environmental sustainability continued to remain a major area of focus for APSEZ, particularly given its extensive presence in coastal regions.

According to the annual report, Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd spent Rs 16.16 crore on climate action and environmental conservation initiatives during FY2025-26.

The report highlights that these programmes focused on biodiversity conservation, mangrove restoration, water stewardship, and ecosystem protection.

One of the most significant achievements mentioned in the report is the restoration and conservation of 4,240 hectares of mangrove ecosystems.

Mangroves play an important role in protecting coastal regions from erosion, supporting biodiversity, and improving climate resilience.

The annual report states that APSEZ’s biodiversity initiatives form part of its broader objective of achieving a net positive impact on biodiversity by 2050.

Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd also continued implementing rainwater harvesting and watershed development projects aimed at improving water security in vulnerable regions.

Another important environmental initiative involved the signing of a three-year conservation programme for Olive Ridley sea turtles along Odisha’s Gahirmatha Coast in partnership with the Wildlife Institute of India.

According to the report, the programme seeks to strengthen conservation efforts for one of the world’s largest nesting populations of Olive Ridley turtles.

Employee Volunteers Support Community Initiatives

The annual report also highlights the role played by employee volunteers in supporting community programmes.

According to the report, APSEZ employees participated in several social and environmental activities throughout the year.

These included beach clean-up drives, health awareness campaigns, educational support programmes, and first-aid training sessions in schools.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited’s employee volunteering framework encourages staff participation in community development initiatives and environmental conservation efforts.

The report highlights that such engagement helps strengthen connections between employees and local communities.

Social Impact Across Communities

According to the annual report, Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd’s CSR programmes generated significant social impact across multiple sectors during FY2025-26.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited’s initiatives supported students, patients, women, farmers, entrepreneurs, and vulnerable groups through targeted interventions.

Education programmes reached tens of thousands of students, while healthcare services extended support to communities with limited access to medical facilities.

Livelihood initiatives focused on strengthening local economies, while environmental programmes contributed to biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.

The report highlights that the company’s CSR strategy is built around long-term community development rather than short-term interventions.

Governance and Oversight

According to the annual report, APSEZ’s CSR activities are overseen by a dedicated CSR Committee that monitors project implementation, fund utilisation, and regulatory compliance.

The company has also introduced systems aimed at improving transparency and accountability in stakeholder engagement.

One such initiative is the Integrated Grievance Management System (IGMS), which enables community members to submit and track grievances digitally.

The report highlights that governance mechanisms are regularly reviewed to ensure CSR funds are utilised effectively and in line with approved objectives.

Looking Ahead

The annual report outlines ambitious social development targets for the coming years.

According to the report, APSEZ plans to expand healthcare outreach, strengthen educational programmes, increase livelihood support, and further scale environmental conservation initiatives.

Future goals include reaching millions of people through healthcare services, supporting a larger number of students through education programmes, and empowering women and farmers through livelihood interventions.

With a CSR expenditure of Rs 199 crore in FY2025-26, APSEZ recorded one of the highest social investments in its history. The report highlights that the company’s focus remains on creating sustainable and measurable impact across communities while supporting broader national development goals.
