NEW DELHI (India CSR): State Bank of India (SBI) continued its strong social responsibility journey in FY 2025-26 with a CSR expenditure of Rs 709.01 crore. The country’s largest bank used its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes to support communities across India. Its initiatives reached more than 58 lakh beneficiaries and covered over 20,000 villages.
SBI’s CSR work was not limited to donations. It focused on infrastructure, education, healthcare, sanitation, livelihood creation, environment, women’s welfare, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, armed forces veterans and rural development. The Bank carried out 1,529 CSR activities during the year.
SBI has a long legacy of social responsibility. The Bank introduced the concept of CSR in 1973 under the idea of “Innovative Banking”. Its CSR philosophy focuses on supporting socially and economically disadvantaged communities.
CSR Spending: Rs 709.01 Crore in FY 2025-26
In FY 2025-26, SBI spent Rs 709.01 crore on Corporate Social Responsibility. This spending reflects the Bank’s commitment to community development and inclusive growth.
SBI follows RBI guidelines for CSR spending. The Bank donates 1% of its previous year’s profit towards CSR initiatives. Its CSR activities are also aligned with Schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013.
The Bank implements CSR programmes through its 17 Circles, different units, branches, Rural Self Employment Training Institutes and SBI Foundation.

Sector-Wise CSR Spending by the Bank
SBI’s CSR spending, excluding SBI Foundation, showed a strong focus on healthcare, education and rural development.
Healthcare and sanitation received Rs 63.81 crore and benefited 30,03,400 people. Education received Rs 60.82 crore and benefited 8,77,583 people. Rural and slum area development received Rs 36.41 crore and benefited 3,25,050 people.
The Bank also spent Rs 20.01 crore on environment-related initiatives, Rs 12.79 crore on war veterans, Rs 7.19 crore on women and senior citizens, Rs 5.06 crore on other CSR activities, Rs 3.79 crore on sports, Rs 1.75 crore on disaster management and Rs 1.42 crore on protection of national heritage.
Healthcare and Sanitation: Largest Beneficiary Outreach
Healthcare and sanitation remained one of SBI’s largest CSR focus areas. The Bank’s spending of Rs 63.81 crore in this segment benefited more than 30 lakh people.
SBI supported primary health centres, medical equipment, sanitation facilities, drinking water systems and health-related infrastructure. The Bank also supported sanitation initiatives for girls in schools.
As part of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao-related initiatives, SBI supported construction of girls’ toilets, distribution of sanitary pad incinerators, reusable sanitary pad kits and cycles for girl students.
Education: Strengthening School Infrastructure
Education was another major pillar of SBI’s CSR work. The Bank spent Rs 60.82 crore in this area and reached 8,77,583 beneficiaries.
During the year, SBI supported the upgradation of primary school infrastructure. It also supported schools, special schools, orphanages and institutions working for children from vulnerable backgrounds.
The Bank’s school infrastructure support included construction, repair, renovation, furniture, science lab equipment, RO plants and transport facilities.
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Initiatives
SBI carried out important CSR work aligned with the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign.
The Bank spent Rs 24.11 crore under these initiatives. It covered 4,555 institutions. The programme included construction of 245 toilets, installation and distribution of 6,82,853 incinerators or reusable sanitary pad kits, and distribution of 7,906 cycles to girl students.
These initiatives directly supported girls’ education, hygiene, mobility and dignity.
Rural and Slum Area Development
SBI spent Rs 36.41 crore on rural and slum area development. This benefited 3,25,050 people.
The Bank’s work in this area focused on livelihood, infrastructure and community development. SBI also supported Rural Self Employment Training Institutes, which play an important role in skill development and livelihood creation.
SBI manages 164 RSETIs across India. During FY 2025-26, 1,47,396 candidates were trained through RSETIs. These institutes help rural youth gain skills and move towards self-employment.

Environment and Sustainability
SBI spent Rs 20.01 crore on environment-related CSR activities. The Bank planted 5,76,497 trees across India during FY 2025-26.
Its environmental initiatives included tree plantation, sustainability awareness camps, solar power support and green infrastructure-related activities.
SBI also supported clean and healthy environment initiatives. One such initiative included CSR support of Rs 1.30 crore for installation of a garbage disposal station in Varanasi.
CSR in Aspirational Districts
SBI gave special attention to aspirational districts. The Bank covered 84 aspirational districts and undertook 276 CSR activities in these districts.
The total CSR expenditure in aspirational districts stood at Rs 17.26 crore. This reflects SBI’s focus on regions that require deeper development support.
The Bank’s interventions in these districts covered education, healthcare, sanitation, rural development and other priority areas.
Support for War Veterans
SBI continued its support for armed forces veterans. The Bank contributed Rs 10 crore to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund.
This support was meant to help dependent children of armed forces veterans pursue their education. The amount was to be used as an education grant of Rs 1,000 per month for one year, benefiting 8,333 dependent children.
Women, Senior Citizens and Inclusion
SBI spent Rs 7.19 crore on empowerment of women and senior citizens. The Bank’s work in this area benefited 1,20,300 people.
The Bank also supported persons with disabilities through mobility, healthcare and institutional assistance. CSR support included vehicles for PwD students, equipment for Divyangjan and assistance to special schools.
These initiatives show SBI’s effort to make its CSR work inclusive and people-centred.
SBI Foundation’s Role
SBI Foundation played a major role in the Bank’s CSR ecosystem. In FY 2026, SBI Foundation funded 203 projects and sanctioned Rs 611 crore.
The Foundation worked through several verticals. These included healthcare, education, rural development, livelihoods, environment and support for persons with disabilities.
SBI Foundation also received recognition for its work, including CSR Times Gold Award 2025 and SKOCH Gold Awards 2025.
Community Infrastructure Development
SBI undertook large-scale community infrastructure development during FY 2025-26. The Bank spent Rs 44.51 crore on upgrading 1,993 institutions.
This included 699 primary schools, 126 old-age homes and women shelter homes, 118 orphanages and special schools, 597 Anganwadi centres and 453 primary health centres.
This infrastructure-focused approach created long-term value for communities.
CSR Governance and Monitoring
SBI’s CSR framework is guided by a defined CSR policy. The policy sets focus areas, budget allocation principles, eligibility criteria and implementation methods.
The Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility Committee provides strategic direction and oversight. The Committee reviews CSR progress and ensures that the initiatives remain aligned with policy guidelines and regulatory requirements.
The CSR Department at the Corporate Centre acts as the nodal agency for coordination, documentation, monitoring and compliance.
