Starting college is a big and exciting step for anyone. You are in for a treat if you are going to Santa Monica College (SMC). The school is amazing, and it is located just a few blocks from the beach. But one of the biggest questions for new students is, “Where am I going to live? And how my experience will be there?

Finding a place to live near SMC can feel a little scary because of the competition you can face there. You might hear that it is expensive or hard to find a spot. This guide will walk you through all your options for Santa Monica College housing. We will break it down into simple steps so you can find a home that is safe, comfortable, and right for your budget.

First, Let’s Talk About the SMC Residence Halls

Many colleges have dorms right on campus but SMC is a little different. The college itself does not own old-fashioned dorms. Instead, it has partnered with a company to create official SMC residence halls very close to campus so that students can think of them as the college’s own apartment buildings for students.

These halls are called The Pearl and The Jewel. They are located at 1250 16th Street, which is just a short walk from your classes and the beach.

Why is this a great choice?

  • It’s Super Easy: Everything is included and provided to students. Your room comes with a bed, a desk, and a dresser. Your rent also includes Wi-Fi, water, and electricity. You don’t have to worry about setting up any bills.
  • You’ll Make Friends Fast: You will be living with hundreds of other SMC students which is great because this is the easiest way to meet people when you are new. You can study together, eat together, and explore Santa Monica together.
  • It’s Safe and Secure: The buildings have security and are only for students. This gives parents and students a lot of peace of mind.
  • Awesome extras: They have a fitness center, rooftop decks with great views, laundry rooms, and quiet study lounges. It’s like living in a mini-resort for students!

The main thing to remember is that these rooms are very popular. If you are interested, you should apply early on their website so that you can have a peace of mind.

Finding a Place Off-Campus: Your Other Main Option

Many students choose to live in an apartment or house near the college. This is called off-campus housing. It gives you more freedom and place but it also requires more work. This is the most important thing to know because Santa Monica is a beautiful and famous city, so it can be expensive. But with some smart searching, you can find a good place.

Where should you look?

SMC has a special website to help you. It’s called the SMC Off-Campus Housing website. Landlords who like renting to students will post their rooms and apartments here. This is a very safe and good place to start your search.

You can also use websites like tripalink.com and Zillow. Some students find rooms on Facebook groups or Craigslist, but you have to be very careful on those sites to avoid scams.

The Power of a Roommate

Renting your own apartment in Santa Monica can cost a lot of money. The number one way to save money is to get a roommate. This means you share an apartment with one or more people.

  • Good things about roommates: You split the rent and the bills. This can make living in Santa Monica much more affordable. It’s also nice to have people to talk to when you come home.
  • Things to think about: You need to find people you get along with. It’s a good idea to talk with potential roommates first. Discuss important things like cleaning, having guests over, and quiet times for studying.

Nice Neighborhoods Near SMC

  • Santa Monica: This is the most convenient place to live. You can walk or bike to school. But it is usually the most expensive area.
  • Mar Vista and Palms: These neighborhoods are a little east of Santa Monica. They are often a bit cheaper, and you can take a short bus ride to get to SMC.
  • West Los Angeles: This is a bigger area with many apartments. You can often find good deals here, and the bus connection to college is reliable.

Smart Tips for Your Housing Search

No matter which path you choose, these tips will help you succeed in your SMC student housing search

  1. Start Looking Early: Do not wait until the last month. Start looking for a place 2 or 3 months before you plan to move. The best and cheapest places get taken quickly.
  2. Know Your Real Budget: When you make a budget, remember that rent is not your only cost. You also have to pay for:
    1. Food and groceries
    1. Electricity and gas (if not included)
    1. Internet
    1. Transportation (bus pass or gas for a car)
    1. A security deposit (this is a one-time payment you get back when you move out, if you keep the place clean).
  3. Watch Out for Scams: This is very important. Never, ever send money to someone for an apartment you have not seen yourself. If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. A real landlord will never ask you to wire money before you sign a lease. Always try to visit the apartment or have a friend visit it for you.
  4. Get Your Papers Ready: When you find a place you like, you need to act fast. Be ready with a folder that has:
    1. A copy of your ID (like a driver’s license or passport)
    1. Proof that you are a student at SMC (your student ID or acceptance letter)
    1. Proof of how you will pay rent (this could be a job pay stub, a letter from your parents, or your financial aid award letter).
  5. Think About How You’ll Get to Class: If you don’t live within walking distance, you need a plan. The Big Blue Bus system in Santa Monica is excellent. SMC students can often get a cheap bus pass, making it easy to get to school every day.

Final Words

Finding your first home away from you own home is a big part of the college adventure. Yes, searching for Santa Monica College housing takes some time and effort. But thousands of students do it every year, and you can also do it. The SMC student residence halls are a perfect choice if you want an easy, all-in-one solution with a built-in community. If you want more independence and are willing to search, the off-campus world has many great options.

Take a deep breath, use this guide, and start your search. Your new home in Santa Monica is waiting for you. Good luck, and welcome to SMC.
