RAIPUR, CHHATTISGARH (India CSR): Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (Mahagenco) officially commenced operations at the Gare-Palma Sector II (GP-II) coal mine in Tamnar Tehsil, Raigarh district, today. The inaugural box cut activity was launched in the presence of Mahagenco’s Chairman and Managing Director, Shri B. Radhakrishnan (IAS).

Key Attendees at the Event

The event saw the participation of Director (Finance) Shri Manish Vishwanath Waghirakar, Director Shri Abhay Harne, Executive Director Shri Nitin Wagh, Shri Pankaj Sapate, administrative officers, senior officials, and the entire project team, marking a significant milestone for Mahagenco.

Regulatory Approvals and Operational Start

Mahagenco has secured all necessary environmental, forest, mining, and administrative approvals for the project. The box cut activity, marking the formal start of operations, was conducted with local villagers and administrative officials present. Coal extraction is planned to begin in January.

Strategic Importance of GP-II Coal Mine

The GP-II coal mine, one of Chhattisgarh’s largest, boasts an annual production capacity of 23.6 million tonnes. It will play a critical role in meeting Maharashtra’s energy needs by supplying coal to thermal power plants in Chandrapur, Koradi, and Parli, contributing over 3,200 MW to the national grid.

Boosting Energy Self-Reliance

This project is poised to significantly reduce India’s dependence on coal imports, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision for energy self-reliance. The mine will strengthen India’s domestic coal resources, ensuring a stable energy supply for the nation.

Economic and Social Impact

The GP-II project is expected to generate around 3,400 direct jobs and thousands of indirect employment opportunities, enhancing local livelihoods. Additionally, it will contribute substantial revenue to the state through royalties, GST, and other taxes, supporting regional development and social welfare initiatives.

Commitment to Social Responsibility

B. Radhakrishnan, Chairman and Managing Director, emphasized Mahagenco’s dedication to job creation, revenue growth, and social responsibility. The company will continue to support initiatives in education, healthcare, and skill development for the benefit of local communities.

Environmental Sustainability Efforts

To maintain environmental balance, Mahagenco has committed to planting 5.64 million native trees across 2,256.60 hectares over 32 years, ensuring sustainable development alongside mining operations.

A Step Toward Inclusive Development

The GP-II coal mine project represents a landmark achievement in fostering inclusive growth, environmental sustainability, and energy independence. It promises long-term benefits for Chhattisgarh through increased revenue and employment opportunities.

Understanding the Box Cut Process

Note: A box cut is an initial excavation in open-cast mining, where a rectangular pit is dug to access coal seams, enabling further mining operations.
