Success Story: Bharat Desai, an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) graduate and former Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) employee, has carved a remarkable path from modest beginnings to becoming a billionaire entrepreneur. With a net worth of Rs. 13,501 crore (approximately $1.6 billion USD), Desai holds the 2111th spot on Forbes’ Billionaires list. His story exemplifies the power of vision, determination, and the entrepreneurial spirit.

Early Life and Academic Foundations

Bharat Desai was born in Kenya in November 1952 but spent his formative years in India. His academic brilliance led him to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. Desai later pursued an MBA in finance at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, further strengthening his foundation in business and technology.

A Humble Start at TCS

In 1976, Desai moved to the United States to work as a programmer for Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). This role became a pivotal chapter in his life, as it was during his time at TCS that he met Neerja Sethi, who would later become his wife and business partner. Together, they envisioned creating something extraordinary.

Living in a small apartment in Michigan, the couple decided to invest approximately Rs. 16,000 to start their own company, setting the stage for a groundbreaking journey in IT consulting.

Co-Founding Syntel: A Leap of Faith

In 1980, Bharat Desai and Neerja Sethi co-founded Syntel, an IT consulting and outsourcing company, from their apartment in Troy, Michigan. With an initial investment of just Rs. 16,000, they focused on delivering innovative IT solutions.

Syntel’s first year was modest, generating $30,000 in sales. However, through their persistence and strategic vision, the company expanded rapidly. By 2018, Syntel’s revenue had soared to $900 million, earning it recognition as a leading IT services firm.

Reflecting on his journey, Desai stated, “It’s about having a strong vision and the patience to build it step by step.”

The Atos SE Acquisition

Syntel’s success caught the attention of French IT giant Atos SE, which acquired the company in 2018 for a staggering $3.4 billion (approximately Rs. 28,000 crore) in cash. The acquisition marked a significant milestone in Desai’s career, further cementing his legacy as a visionary entrepreneur.

However, the acquisition was not without controversy. Atos later sued Desai, alleging that he concealed liabilities ahead of the merger. The lawsuit was dismissed in 2023, clearing Desai of any wrongdoing.

Life Beyond Business

Bharat Desai now resides with his family on Fisher Island, Florida, where he continues to focus on philanthropy. His contributions include supporting Detroit’s “Paint the Town” initiative, which revitalizes struggling neighborhoods.

Desai’s achievements have been widely recognized. He received the “Entrepreneur of the Year” award from USA Today and NASDAQ in 1996. Additionally, Syntel was listed among Forbes’ “Best 200 Small Companies in America.”

Lessons from Desai’s Journey

Bharat Desai’s story offers several key takeaways for aspiring entrepreneurs:

  1. Vision and Patience: Success often requires a clear vision and the patience to execute it step by step.
  2. Collaboration: Building a strong partnership, as seen with Desai and Sethi, can amplify impact.
  3. Adaptability: Growing a business from a small apartment to a global IT powerhouse requires adaptability and innovation.
  4. Philanthropy: Success is complete when it is used to uplift communities, as demonstrated by Desai’s charitable initiatives.
