The Emergence of a Digital Threat

In an era where technology dominates, a new type of cyber scam is on the rise, targeting unsuspecting smartphone users. Fraudsters, disguising themselves as customer service agents from reputable mobile network operators or internet service providers, are exploiting individuals for financial gain. Call forwarding scams are a type of fraud where scammers trick people into activating call forwarding on their phones. This allows the scammers to intercept all incoming calls, including those from banks and other financial institutions.

The scammers can then use this information to steal money and sensitive information from their victims.Major telecom operators like Reliance Jio and Airtel have recognized this threat and are actively warning users about these call forwarding scams.

The Mechanics of Call Forwarding Scams

Defining the Scam

A call forwarding scam is a deceptive technique where scammers impersonate customer service agents, contacting smartphone users with claims of issues related to mobile internet, account security, or SIM card problems. To resolve these fabricated issues, scammers instruct users to dial specific codes, such as 401, which unknowingly activates call forwarding to the scammer’s phone number. This grants them access to the victim’s incoming calls, including voice OTPs, all while the victim remains unaware since their phone remains silent.

The Scammer’s Strategy

These scammers are skilled manipulators, using a variety of pretexts to gain the trust of their targets. They might claim to address mobile internet issues, assert that the victim’s account is compromised, or suggest SIM card troubles. Upon gaining trust, they guide the victim to dial a specific code, initiating call forwarding to a number they control. This allows them to intercept calls, attempt unauthorized logins, and potentially access sensitive information.

The Hidden Dangers

The insidious nature of this call forwarding scams lies in its ability to operate undetected. Victims remain unaware of the call forwarding, as their phones do not ring for incoming calls. Scammers primarily aim for financial exploitation, seeking unauthorized access to accounts and sensitive information. Even with banks employing robust security measures, vulnerabilities in smartphone user practices can be exploited, risking access to various accounts, including messaging apps.

Decoding the Scam

What is a Call Forwarding Scam?

A call forwarding scam is a sophisticated form of deception where scammers impersonate customer service agents. They contact smartphone users, alleging issues with mobile internet, account security, or SIM cards. Their solution? Prompting users to dial specific codes that activate call forwarding to the scammer’s number, giving them access to the victim’s calls and voice OTPs, all while the victim remains in the dark.

The Scammer’s Playbook

These con artists employ various tactics to gain trust and manipulate their targets. They may inquire about mobile internet problems, claim the victim’s account is at risk, or suggest issues with the SIM card. Once trust is established, they instruct the user to dial a code, initiating call forwarding and diverting incoming calls to a number they control. This access can lead to unauthorized account logins and potential data breaches.

  • If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from a customer service representative, ask for their name and employee ID number.
  • Tell the caller that you will call them back at a number that you know is correct.
  • Do not dial any numbers that the caller gives you.
  • Report any suspicious calls to your mobile or internet service provider and to the Federal Trade Commission.

***

Action

If you think that you may have been a victim of a call forwarding scam, you should immediately contact your mobile or internet service provider to have call forwarding disabled. You should also contact your bank and other financial institutions to let them know what happened.

***

Conclusion
