BENGALURU: Reliance Industries Limited, one of India’s leading conglomerates, has taken a big step towards a greener future with the unveiling of India’s first Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2ICE) technology that provides solution for heavy duty trucks.
Flagged off by the Prime Minister
The technology was unveiled at the India Energy Week in Bangalore. It was flagged off by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The initiative represents a major milestone in the country’s efforts to reduce emissions and tackle the challenges posed by climate change.
Redefine green mobility
The H2ICE powered trucks are expected to deliver near-zero emissions. The technology making them a cleaner alternative to conventional diesel trucks. They are also expected to deliver performance on par with conventional diesel trucks, while reducing noise levels. These trucks have the potential to redefine green mobility and set a new standard for the industry.
First deployment planned for captive fleet
In partnership with vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland and other technical partners, Reliance has been engaged in the development of this unique technology for the past year. The first engines have been running since early 2022. The company now plans to extensively test and validate the technology before its first commercial deployment. The first deployment is planned for Reliance’s captive fleet. They will be scaling the technology across India in the near future.
Creating Hydrogen Fueling Network
In line with its Net Carbon Zero vision, the company is also pursuing the opportunity to create an end-to-end hydrogen ecosystem for mobility. This will include the development of a hydrogen supply chain and infrastructure. It is also expected to create a hydrogen fueling network. By doing so, the company aims to make hydrogen a viable alternative to conventional fuels and help India transition to a more sustainable future.
