In India, Consumer customers are able to return their obsolete IT products to Dell, in accordance with its producer responsibility policy (PRP). “As a customer you can also choose to bring your old Dell electronic equipment through our Return to Dell services.”, company said in its website.
As a part of its Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), Dell has appointed Karo Sambhav Private Limited, a Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO – an industry collective program) to create awareness, meet WEEE collection targets, work towards development of a sustainable eco-system for effective management of e-waste and support future policy development.
Dell has 34 drop-off points in India, offering free recycling for its consumer segment customers. Company has a target of recovering 2 billion pound of used electronics by the the year 2020.
“Dell recovered 168 million pounds (76.2 million kilograms) of used electronics in FY 2016. Since our baseline year of FY 2008, we have recovered a cumulative total of 1.6 billion pounds (722 million kilograms) of electronics.” a report said.
Company is facing several challenges to recover 2 billion pounds of used electronics by 2020.
India – E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016 places responsibilities on consumer and bulk consumer of electrical and electronic equipment listed in Schedule I to ensure that e-waste generated by them is channelized through collection center or dealer of authorized producer or dismantler or recycler or through the designated takeback service provider of the producer to authorized dismantler or recycler.
India – E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016 was published on 23 March 2016 and came into effect from 01 October 2016. The rules supersedes E-waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2011 in force since 01 May 2012.
The Rules, requires producers to implement Extended Producers Responsibility which includes collection and channelization of e-waste generated from the ‘end of life’ products with the targets prescribed and to ensure that the mechanism of such e-wastes are channelized to authorized dismantler or recycler.
