India’s renowned social sector expert Prof. Nagendranath Sharma, Chairperson, Centre for Sustainability and CSR at Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) and also Associate Professor of Sustainability and CSR, passed away due to age related illness on Saturday, 10 April 2021 morning in Greater Noida.
For the last decade, as a professor of responsible business and sustainability, he was crisscrossing the country for doing ground level field work to assess what are the needs of the community at grass root levels. He was advising big corporates on impact assessment of CSR and sustainability projects.
Condoling his death, BIMTECH Director Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi said India CSR, “Pained by Professor N.N. Sharma demise. We have lost a brilliant academician and scholar who made a lasting contribution to Indian management education.”
“He was a great human being who remained connected with every ordinary person and also VIPs. He used to treat everyone in the same manner. He was very popular among young faculty and staff.”, he added.
“Prof N N Sharma, you will always remain part of our memories for ever.”, Dr. Chaturvedi said.
India CSR founder and Managing Editor Rusen Kumar has expressed grief over the demise of Professor N.N. Sharma.
In a message, he said, “Professor NN Sharma made pioneering contributions to CSR and Sustainability academics and community service. I recall my interactions with him on many occasions, when we discussed many subjects including betterment of CSR and Sustainability reporting and transparency in India. Saddened by the demise of such a great personality. Condolences to his family. Namo Buddhay.”
Sanskriti University Vice Chancellor Dr. Rana Singh said, It was always a great pleasure to have met him in various academic events organized by BIMTECH family. I am at loss of words to express my grief after knowing about his sudden demise. He was an optimal blend of Knowledge, Skills and Competencies in the domain of CSR and sustainable domain. He was a human being par excellence apart from being a reputed academician, researcher and practitioner from the domain of CSR and Sustainability. I pray to the almighty to grant peace to the departed soul and pray for courage to his family members and all members of BIMTECH Family.
He worked for over 30 years in the social development sector. He worked with developmental agencies of the government, UNIDO, UNDP and was associated with projects supported by DFID, UK and the World Bank. He was B.Sc. (Mechanical Engineering) from Patna University.
He served on the various boards. He was Managing Director, Rajasthan Consultancy Organisation Ltd., Jaipur, (Sponsored by all India Financial Institutions & Banks) during 1991-92. National Aluminium Company Limited, NALCO, public sector undertaking appointed him as an Independent Director in 2017. He also served as Vice- Chairman, Social Audit Committee to ACC Ltd. He was a Member, CSR Committee, NALCO. He also served Dalmia Bharat Foundation board as Member, Stakeholder Committee. He mentored various entrepreneurs and academicians.
He organised numbers of national and international level seminars, conferences and MDPs in the area of CSR, Sustainability, Human Resource, and Social Enterprise.
He was a Trustee, BIMTECH Foundation, supported by BIMTECH, where he was instrumental for the Social Development Project for Rural Girls ‘Project Chiraiya”.
