New Eye Hospital in Saharsa to Provide 1.5 Lakh Consultations and 40,000 Cataract Surgeries Over Five Years
SAHARSA, Bihar (India CSR): REC Limited, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has extended CSR – Corporate Social Responsibility assistance of Rs. 11.55 crore to Sankara Eye Hospital in Saharsa, Bihar. The support has been provided under REC’s flagship CSR initiative “Bringing Vision to Bihar.”
The newly inaugurated hospital is expected to strengthen access to quality eye care in Northern Bihar, especially for underserved and economically weaker communities.
The hospital was inaugurated by Giriraj Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister, in the presence of TSC Bosh, Director (Projects), REC Limited, senior government officials, and other dignitaries.
A Major Step Towards Preventable Blindness Control
The Sankara Eye Hospital in Saharsa has been developed to address the growing need for affordable and accessible ophthalmic care in Bihar. The facility will focus on eye screenings, cataract surgeries, advanced diagnosis, and treatment for various eye-related conditions.
Over the next five years, the project aims to deliver 1.5 lakh outpatient consultations and 40,000 cataract surgeries. This will play a key role in reducing preventable blindness in the region.
The initiative is particularly important for rural and low-income populations who often face barriers in accessing specialized eye care due to distance, cost, and lack of awareness.
CSR Grant to Strengthen Medical Infrastructure
The ₹11.55 crore CSR grant from REC Limited has helped equip the hospital with modern ophthalmic infrastructure. The support includes advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment, fully equipped patient wards, sterile operation theatres, and other essential medical facilities.
The hospital has also been provided with a rural outreach fleet. These specialized vehicles will support eye-screening camps in remote villages. Through these camps, patients requiring further treatment can be identified and referred to the hospital.
Focus on Free and Subsidized Eye Care
A key feature of the initiative is its inclusive healthcare approach. The hospital will provide free and subsidized services to underserved and economically marginalized communities.
This will help ensure that quality eye care reaches those who need it most. The project is expected to benefit rural households, elderly citizens, daily wage earners, and low-income families across Northern Bihar.
REC’s Commitment to Community Development
REC Limited has been actively supporting healthcare, education, sanitation, rural development, and livelihood projects through its CSR initiatives. The support to Sankara Eye Hospital reflects the company’s commitment to creating long-term social impact through need-based development interventions.
By investing in eye care infrastructure in Bihar, REC Limited is helping build a sustainable healthcare ecosystem for the region.
Transforming Eye Care in Northern Bihar
The Sankara Eye Hospital in Saharsa is expected to become an important center for ophthalmic treatment and community outreach. With modern facilities and a strong focus on affordability, the hospital will help bridge the healthcare gap in rural and semi-urban Bihar.
The initiative marks a significant step in improving vision care, restoring eyesight, and enhancing quality of life for thousands of people in the state.
