VIRUDHUNAGAR, Tamil Nadu (India CSR): In a major step toward advancing women’s empowerment and rural development, the Omega Forum for Social Impact (OFSI) has launched a three-year integrated initiative aimed at strengthening women’s health, social security and sustainable livelihoods in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu.
The project, titled “Building Health, Social Security and Livelihoods for Rural Women,” was inaugurated on February 25, 2026, at Sri Chithanathar Thirumanamandabham, Thiruchuli, in partnership with Swasti – The Health Catalyst. Designed for the aspirational district of Virudhunagar, the initiative will focus on improving healthcare access, expanding coverage of government welfare schemes, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural women over the next three years.
Omega Forum for Social Impact (OFSI) is the CSR arm of Omega Healthcare, is dedicated to empowering grassroots communities, with a focus on women and girls as catalysts for socio-economic development. Community Driven Change
The project will be implemented across Thiruchuli and Aruppukottai blocks of Virudhunagar district. Adopting an integrated, community-led development approach, the programme aims to address multiple challenges faced by rural women, including limited access to primary healthcare, inadequate awareness of social protection schemes, and restricted economic opportunities. The launch event brought together district administration officials, public health professionals, academia, corporate leaders and farmer collectives, demonstrating the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in achieving sustainable community development.
Women Driving Change
Speaking at the launch, Sunanda, CEO of Omega Forum for Social Impact (OFSI), highlighted the transformative role women play in community progress. “Women’s empowerment is the most reliable driver of social change because women reinvest knowledge, income, and opportunity back into their families and communities,” she said. Her remarks emphasized that when women gain access to health services, financial security, and income opportunities, the benefits extend far beyond individuals to strengthen families and entire communities.
Legacy of Progress
The event’s Chief Guest, Narayanan V, Senior Vice President – RM, Omega Healthcare, reflected on the historical legacy of the district in promoting social progress. “Virudhunagar has a strong tradition of social investment. As the birthplace of K. Kamaraj, it showed the nation how education can transform society. Today, investing in women carries that legacy forward,” he noted. Virudhunagar has long been known for its contribution to education and social reform, making it a meaningful location for launching an initiative focused on empowering rural women.

Expanding Healthcare Access
One of the key goals of the project is to improve access to basic healthcare services for 30,000 women in rural communities. Through awareness programmes and strengthened linkages with the public health system, the initiative will help women gain better access to preventive healthcare, maternal health services, and other essential health facilities. Improved healthcare access is expected to contribute significantly to better health outcomes and overall well-being among rural women and their families.
Strengthening Social Security
Another major component of the programme focuses on improving access to government welfare schemes. The initiative aims to support 22,500 women in accessing social protection programmes, including health insurance, pensions, and other government benefits. By improving awareness and facilitating enrolment in these schemes, the project seeks to ensure that women and their families receive the social safety nets designed to support vulnerable communities.
Promoting Rural Livelihoods
Economic empowerment is a key pillar of the initiative. The project will support 150 women in developing sustainable livelihood opportunities through goat rearing. Participants will receive training, capacity building, and financial support through a revolving fund. This livelihood model is expected to help women generate stable incomes, strengthen financial independence, and contribute to household economic stability.
Strengthening Collective Enterprises
The programme will also focus on building collective economic opportunities for women. Women’s groups will be linked with Meshavaram Agricultural Producer Company Limited, enabling them to participate in collective enterprise and agricultural value chains. By strengthening women’s leadership and community institutions, the initiative aims to ensure that the benefits of the programme continue even after the project period ends.
Sustainable Community Impact
By placing rural women at the centre of development efforts, the project seeks to create lasting improvements in health, economic empowerment and social protection. The initiative represents a holistic approach to development where healthcare access, social security and livelihood opportunities are addressed together to create sustainable, community-owned impact. As corporate and community partnerships continue to grow, such integrated initiatives have the potential to become models for rural empowerment across India.
