Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi Announces Rs40,000 Crore Investment for Industrial Growth
NEW DELHI (India CSR): Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Sunday that a mega steel plant with an investment of Rs. 40,000 crore will be set up in the Patna area of Keonjhar district. The project will be a joint venture between JSW Group and POSCO, marking a significant step in Odisha’s industrial and economic development.
Speaking at a public gathering in Champua, the Chief Minister stated, “I had vowed to set up a mega steel plant in Keonjhar district. God was kind enough to make me the Chief Minister to realize this dream.”
A Massive Industrial Push Beyond Keonjhar
The Chief Minister further revealed that, apart from the Patna region, multiple steel industries will be developed across various parts of Keonjhar, bringing the total investment in the district to over Rs. 1 lakh crore.
The announcement comes as part of Odisha’s broader push to attract industrial investment.
On January 28, during the ‘Utkarsh Odisha – Make in Odisha Conclave’, JSW Group, led by Sajjan Jindal, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Odisha government to establish a 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) steel plant in Keonjhar.

JSW-POSCO Partnership for India’s Steel Sector
In October last year, JSW Group and South Korean steel giant POSCO signed an MoU to develop an integrated steel plant in India with an initial capacity of 5 MTPA. However, the exact location of the steel plant was not disclosed at the time.
The establishment of this mega steel plant in Keonjhar aligns with the state’s ambition to become a global hub for steel production, leveraging Odisha’s rich mineral resources. The project is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, boost the local economy, and strengthen India’s position in the global steel market.
Government Support for Education & Agriculture
During his speech in Keonjhar, CM Mohan Charan Majhi also announced a ₹4 crore grant for the construction of a three-storey building at Chandra Sekhar College in Champua.
This follows an earlier Rs. 3.30 crore grant allocated by Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj for the development of the college.
Additionally, the Chief Minister inaugurated a five-day Regional Agricultural Machinery Fair in Keonjhar, emphasizing the crucial role of agriculture in Odisha’s economy, where over 60% of the population depends on farming and allied activities.
Cultural & Public Engagement Initiatives
At the event, CM Majhi also released a special song titled ‘People’s CM Mohan’, dedicated to the people of Odisha.
A Game-Changer for Odisha’s Industrial Landscape
The JSW-POSCO steel plant is set to transform Odisha’s industrial and economic landscape, reinforcing the state’s commitment to industrialization, infrastructure development, and job creation. With strategic investments in steel, education, and agriculture, Odisha is paving the way for sustained economic growth and a brighter future for its people.
