Jindal Steel has commissioned one of India’s largest blast furnaces at its integrated steel plant in Angul, doubling hot metal capacity from 4 MTPA to 9 MTPA.

ANGUL (Odisha): Jindal Steel has commissioned one of India’s largest blast furnaces at its integrated steel plant in Angul, marking a significant milestone in the country’s steelmaking journey. With the commissioning of the 5 MTPA Bhagavati Subhadrika Blast Furnace–II, the company has doubled its hot metal capacity from 4 MTPA to 9 MTPA and is firmly on track to achieve 12 MTPA crude steel capacity at Angul.

Backed by an investment footprint of over USD 12 billion, Jindal Steel operates cutting-edge facilities in Angul, Raigarh (Chhattisgarh) and Patratu (Jharkhand), along with strategic operations across India and Africa. Its diverse and future-oriented product portfolio supports key sectors such as infrastructure, construction and manufacturing, driving growth with strength and sustainability.

The ceremonial “blow-in” of the new blast furnace was carried out by Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Steel, in the presence of senior officials and plant employees. With this, Angul has emerged as the largest single-location steel facility in India, cementing its position as the centrepiece of Jindal Steel’s long-term growth strategy.

State-of-the-Art Facility

The Bhagavati Subhadrika Blast Furnace boasts a useful volume of 5,499 cubic metres, placing it among the world’s largest and most technologically advanced. Designed with cutting-edge automation, robust safety features, and enhanced sustainability, the furnace reflects Jindal Steel’s push towards innovation and operational excellence.

“Commissioning the Bhagavati Subhadrika Blast Furnace at Angul is a proud moment for Jindal Steel and for India. By doubling Angul’s capacity to 12 MTPA, we are strengthening our global competitiveness and reaffirming our commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat. Rooted in Odisha’s culture and powered by cutting-edge technology, this furnace represents our vision to unite tradition with innovation,” said Mr. Naveen Jindal, Chairman of Jindal Steel.

Future Expansion Plans

The commissioning gives fresh momentum to Jindal Steel’s broader growth ambitions. The Angul plant will now serve as the company’s central hub for future expansions, with several supporting projects already planned. These include a dedicated port at Paradeep, a slurry pipeline and coal pipe conveyor to ensure raw material efficiency, the Shreebhoomi Power Plant, and new coke oven batteries.

Together, these projects will not only strengthen the supply chain but also reinforce Angul’s role as the cornerstone of Jindal Steel’s global growth strategy.

Boost to Odisha

With this development, Odisha’s industrial landscape is set to receive a significant boost. The Angul facility is expected to generate employment opportunities, promote ancillary industries, and contribute to regional development. It also underscores Odisha’s growing prominence as a hub for large-scale steel production in India.

Industry experts note that with the Angul plant’s enhanced capacity, Jindal Steel is better positioned to cater to rising domestic demand while also scaling up exports. The move aligns with India’s broader ambition to raise steel production capacity to 300 MTPA by 2030, supporting infrastructure, construction, and manufacturing sectors.
