RAIPUR – Chhattisgarh (India CSR): The Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Board has ordered the closure of 30 industrial units and imposed environmental compensation of Rs 28.92 lakh on 13 industries for violations of pollution control norms, officials said on Friday.

The action comes as part of the board’s continuous monitoring of industrial units for environmental compliance. Officials said the Regional Office, Raipur, has been carrying out regular inspections of water- and air-polluting industries and has initiated strict legal action wherever violations were found under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.

23 Industries Served Notices Since January

According to official information, notices have been issued to 23 industries since January 2026 after pollution-related violations were detected during inspections.

Among the major units named are sponge iron industries located in the Urla and Siltara industrial areas, including Vaswani Industries Limited, Shilphy Steels Private Limited, and SKS Ispat and Power Limited. A notice was also issued to Sarda Energy and Minerals Limited in connection with alleged fly ash dumping without permission.

The board said these actions were taken after pollution was found during inspections and after complaints were received against certain industrial units.

30 Units Face Closure and Power Disconnection

The board stated that stricter action had to be taken because several units failed to make satisfactory improvements even after receiving notices. Some units were also found operating without the board’s consent, while others continued to be linked to pollution complaints.

“As a result, production closure and electricity disconnection measures have so far been taken against 30 industries,” the board said.

This action signals a significant tightening of regulatory enforcement in Chhattisgarh’s industrial belt, particularly in the Raipur region, where pollution-intensive industries have long remained under close observation.

No Permission Until Full Compliance

The environment board made it clear that no affected unit will be allowed to resume operations until it fully complies with all environmental standards, statutory provisions, and consent conditions laid down by the regulatory authority.

The board underlined that operational permission would remain withheld until the concerned industries demonstrate complete adherence to prescribed environmental norms. This includes compliance with pollution control systems, waste disposal requirements, emission standards, and the legal conditions attached to board consent.

Rs 28.92 Lakh Environmental Compensation Imposed

In addition to closure measures, the board has imposed environmental compensation totalling Rs 28.92 lakh on 13 industries found to be in violation of environmental rules.

The imposition of compensation is aimed at holding polluting industries financially accountable and reinforcing the principle that environmental damage and non-compliance will attract tangible penalties.

The board, however, did not specify in the release the individual compensation amounts imposed on each of the 13 industrial units.

Public Interest and Environmental Protection Prioritised

Reiterating its commitment to public welfare and environmental protection, the board appealed to all industrial units and related departments to strictly follow environmental regulations and ensure timely compliance with administrative directions.

It also made it clear that tough action against violators will continue in future as well.

The latest action reflects an assertive approach by the Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Board in dealing with industrial pollution and sends a strong message that non-compliance with environmental laws will not be tolerated.
