Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, is known for his ambitious projects and his desire to make a positive impact on the world. In a conversation with Lex Fridman, Musk shared some advice for young people who want to follow in his footsteps and make a difference in the world. Here are some of the highlights.

Be Useful

Musk believes that the key to making a positive impact is to be useful. He encourages people to do things that are useful to their fellow human beings and to the world. However, he acknowledges that this is easier said than done. “It’s very hard to be useful,” he says. “You contributing more than you consume, you know, like can you try to have a positive net contribution to society? I think that’s the thing to aim for.”

Read a Lot

One of Musk’s favorite pieces of advice is to read a lot of books. He believes that reading is a super-fast shortcut to figure out what you’re interested in and what you’re good at. He encourages people to read broadly in many different subject areas and to try to develop a good general knowledge. This will help you get a rough lay of the land of the knowledge landscape and figure out where your interests lie.

Develop a Growth Mindset

Musk also believes that it’s important to have a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset. A growth mindset means that you believe that you can learn and improve over time. A fixed mindset, on the other hand, means that you believe that your abilities and talents are fixed and cannot be changed. Musk believes that having a growth mindset is essential if you want to make a positive impact on the world.

Find Your Passion

Musk advises young people to find something that they are passionate about and to pursue it relentlessly. He believes that the key to success is to find a thing where there’s an overlap of your talents and what you’re interested in. This will help you find something that you’re inherently good at and that you also enjoy doing.

Avoid a Zero-Sum Mindset

Finally, Musk cautions against having a zero-sum mindset. This means believing that there is a fixed amount of resources in the world and that the only way to get ahead is to take things from others. Musk believes that this mindset is a major source of moral ambiguity and that it can lead people to do things that are morally questionable. Instead, he encourages people to have a growth mindset and to work on adding to the economic pie rather than taking from others.

Conclusion

Elon Musk’s advice for young people who want to make a positive impact on the world is simple but powerful. He believes that it’s important to be useful, to read a lot, to develop a growth mindset, to find your passion, and to avoid a zero-sum mindset. By following these principles, Musk believes that anyone can make a positive contribution to society and to the world.
