Avantika Saraogi is a young pioneer in the world of sugarcane and bioplastics operations, bringing a passion and drive that is truly exceptional. Having graduated with distinction (Cum Laude) and a B.A. Hons from Scripps College in Claremont, California, USA, Avantika is now the fourth-generation member of the promoter family to join Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd. (BCML).
In a remarkable display of perseverance and vision, Avantika is steering BCML towards establishing a PLA (Polylactic Acid) manufacturing facility, which will become India’s first-ever bioplastics plant. PLA is a bio-based, compostable plastic derived from renewable resources such as sugarcane. With low carbon emissions and broad applications in packaging, 3D printing, biomedical devices, and more, it is one of the best eco-friendly alternatives to conventional single-use plastics.
Over four years, she navigated numerous challenges to herald not only India’s maiden bioplastics plant but also two global milestones, where sugarcane will be processed into PLA for the first time at a single location in a plant powered solely by renewable energy. With a capacity of 80,000 tons annually, the plant is slated to commence operations by Q2 2026. This bold move promises not just increased turnover and profitability for BCML but also leaves a significant environmental impact. By aligning top global technology providers,
nurturing talent, securing downstream capabilities, and garnering government support, she has led a journey toward sustainable progress and business success.
At BCML, Avantika leads PLA (bioplastics), cane operations, and development, while also overseeing strategy, procurement, grower relations, tech, sustainability, and communications, driving the organization to new heights. Her vision is a world that fully embraces sugarcane’s potential, with a deep commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental impact.
Backed by data and research, Avantika consistently challenged the myth that sugarcane is inherently a water-intensive crop—a view now accepted across the industry. She is driving BCML’s shift from traditional sugar and ethanol to advanced specialty chemicals and biomaterials and also led the nationwide ‘Bioyug on Wheels’ campaign to promote bioplastics.
Inspired by her late grandmother, Padma Smt. Meenakshi Saraogi, and her father, a visionary industrialist Vivek Saraogi, Avantika carries forward their legacy with a bold, people-first approach. She champions farmer welfare, rural development, and transformative leadership, pushing beyond industry norms. Her vision and impact earned her a spot on Fortune India’s 2025 40 Under 40 list.
