UDAIPUR (India CSR): Hindustan Zinc Limited, India’s largest and the world’s second largest integrated producer celebrated India’s 78th Independence Day with great fervor across its operational units in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. The company carried out flag hoisting, plantation drives, parades with employees, business partners and community members. The highlight of the celebration was five Sakhi didis from the company’s flagship women empowerment initiative Sakhi being invited as special guests by Ministry of Mines for the Independence Day celebrations at Red Fort. These five Sakhi didis were among the eleven special guests identified by the Ministry of Mines. Hindustan Zinc’s Sakhi program promotes women empowerment and mobilizes tribal and rural women groups to make them financially independent and empower them to become change agents in society.
The company celebrated Independence Day across all its locations with parades, plantation drives, skits, dances and many other such activities. Most notable of all was the grand illumination of the world’s largest underground zinc mining operation at Rampura Agucha (Rajasthan) with its shaft (elevator for man and material movement) illuminated with tricolor lights. Rampura Agucha mine was illuminated with beautiful tricolour lights even, 400 meters below the surface to depict how the strength of the country is forged from metals deep within the earth.

The Sakhi didis selected by the Ministry of Mines are the changemakers and role models for women in their communities and society. Among the five selected, Mona Salvi from Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan has been associated with the Sakhi program since 2019 and oversees the overall performance of four textile units.
She has enabled women from her village and nearby areas to earn a minimum of Rs 3500/- per month on their own. Another Sakhi didi, Ratna Sidkar from Rudrapur district of Uttarakhand has been associated with the program since 2019 and is leading the Women Federation – Sakhi Umang Samiti with a membership of 4000 rural women. She also facilitates sessions in schools on menstrual health and hygiene.
