UDAIPUR (India CSR): Hindustan Zinc Limited, India’s largest and the world’s second largest integrated producer celebrated India’s 78th Independence Day with great fervor across its operational units in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. The company carried out flag hoisting, plantation drives, parades with employees, business partners and community members. The highlight of the celebration was five Sakhi didis from the company’s flagship women empowerment initiative Sakhi being invited as special guests by Ministry of Mines for the Independence Day celebrations at Red Fort. These five Sakhi didis were among the eleven special guests identified by the Ministry of Mines. Hindustan Zinc’s Sakhi program promotes women empowerment and mobilizes tribal and rural women groups to make them financially independent and empower them to become change agents in society.

The company celebrated Independence Day across all its locations with parades, plantation drives, skits, dances and many other such activities. Most notable of all was the grand illumination of the world’s largest underground zinc mining operation at Rampura Agucha (Rajasthan) with its shaft (elevator for man and material movement) illuminated with tricolor lights. Rampura Agucha mine was illuminated with beautiful tricolour lights even, 400 meters below the surface to depict how the strength of the country is forged from metals deep within the earth.

Hindustan Zinc, India’s largest producer of zinc, lead and silver, has been a long-standing partner to the nation’s growth and progress. The company produces metals which are crucial for India’s rapid economic growth and supports the ongoing global energy transition with its innovative product offerings for clean technologies.

Addressing the flag hoisting ceremony held at the company’s Head Office in Udaipur, Arun Misra, CEO Hindustan Zinc Limited, said, “India is rising rapidly and steadily by establishing its presence as one of the top 5 growing nations in the world. At Hindustan Zinc, we embody the spirit of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat,’ producing top-quality zinc, lead, and silver – metals that are critical to India’s rapid journey towards becoming an economic & manufacturing superpower.  We are dedicated to supporting the growth of our nation by ramping up our capacities and catalyzing further development with innovative product solutions. Our journey is one of collaboration, innovation, and shared purpose, as we work together to build a stronger, greener, and more prosperous India. One that will take the country to its rightful place on the world stage.”

The Sakhi didis selected by the Ministry of Mines are the changemakers and role models for women in their communities and society. Among the five selected, Mona Salvi from Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan has been associated with the Sakhi program since 2019 and oversees the overall performance of four textile units.

She has enabled women from her village and nearby areas to earn a minimum of Rs 3500/- per month on their own. Another Sakhi didi, Ratna Sidkar from Rudrapur district of Uttarakhand has been associated with the program since 2019 and is leading the Women Federation – Sakhi Umang Samiti with a membership of 4000 rural women. She also facilitates sessions in schools on menstrual health and hygiene.
