Mahindra Logistics Ltd has taken an initiative to provide LPG cylinders to the families in Thakurpada and Bhospada of Tembha village near Shahpur, Maharasthra.
It is conducting various developmental initiatives including infrastructure development, education, health and vocational guidance for its residents over the years.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), company has already processed 102 applications for LPG connections so far and 54 more are underway. These residents have been using firewood for cooking, which is not only harmful for the environment, but also affects their health.
Pirojshaw Sarkari, CEO, Mahindra Logistics said, “We aim to safeguard the health of women & children by providing them with a clean cooking fuel. With its use, they no longer have to compromise their health in smoky kitchens or wander in unsafe locations to collect firewood. Under this initiative, we aim to provide maximum LPG connections in FY20 and not only empower these women but transform their lives towards a healthy and pollution free environment.”
The smoke from burning such fuels causes alarming household pollution and adversely affects the health of Women & children causing several respiratory diseases/ disorders. As per a WHO report, smoke inhaled by women from unclean fuel is equivalent to burning 400 cigarettes in an hour. In addition, women and children have to go through the drudgery of collecting firewood.
India is home to more than 24 Crore households out of which about 10 Crore households are still deprived of LPG as cooking fuel and have to rely on firewood, coal, dung – cakes etc. as primary source of cooking, as per the website of PMUY.
