CSR Initiative Aims to Strengthen Rural Livelihoods and Promote Sustainable Aquaculture.

SINGRAULI, M.P. (India CSR): In a move aimed at boosting rural livelihoods and promoting sustainable aquaculture, Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the district administration of Singrauli to establish a modern fish seed production hatchery under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

The initiative, valued at Rs 67.57 lakh, is expected to significantly enhance fish production capacity in the region while providing direct and indirect benefits to nearly 30,000 people engaged in fisheries and allied activities.

Project to Enhance Fish Production Capacity

Officials said the proposed hatchery unit will address the shortage of quality fish seed in Singrauli and nearby areas, which has long been a constraint for local fish farmers.

By ensuring a consistent and reliable supply of fish seed, the project is expected to improve productivity in aquaculture, reduce dependency on external sources, and support the growth of the fisheries sector in the region.

“The hatchery will act as a critical infrastructure facility to strengthen local fish farming and enhance output,” an official associated with the project said.

Boost to Rural Livelihoods and Employment

The initiative is designed to create sustainable income opportunities for rural communities, particularly small-scale fish farmers and fishermen.

Experts note that improved access to quality inputs such as fish seed can significantly increase yields and profitability, thereby strengthening household incomes.

In addition to enhancing existing livelihoods, the project is also expected to generate new employment opportunities in areas such as hatchery management, fish farming, and related supply chains.

Focus on Sustainable Development Practices

The hatchery project aligns with NCL’s broader focus on sustainable and community-centric development in its operational regions.

Officials said the initiative will promote scientific aquaculture practices, encouraging farmers to adopt modern techniques that improve efficiency and environmental sustainability.

By building local capacity and infrastructure, the project aims to create a self-reliant ecosystem for fish production in the region.

Part of NCL’s Expanding CSR Portfolio

As a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, NCL has been actively implementing CSR initiatives across sectors including education, healthcare, skill development, and livelihood enhancement.

The fish hatchery project adds to the company’s ongoing efforts to support socio-economic development in mining-affected areas, where diversification of income sources is critical for long-term resilience.

Economic Impact on Singrauli Region

Singrauli, known primarily for its coal mining activities, is gradually witnessing a shift towards diversified rural development models. The hatchery initiative is expected to contribute to this transition by strengthening aquaculture as a viable economic activity.

Local stakeholders have welcomed the project, expressing optimism that it will provide a steady source of income and reduce economic vulnerability among rural households.

Step Towards Inclusive Growth

The MoU marks a significant step in integrating CSR efforts with local development priorities. By combining infrastructure creation with livelihood support, the initiative aims to deliver long-term benefits to the community.

Officials said such projects reflect a growing emphasis on inclusive growth, where corporate participation plays a key role in addressing grassroots challenges.

As implementation begins, the fish hatchery is expected to emerge as a model for sustainable rural development, contributing to both economic upliftment and resource optimisation in the region.
