HDFC Bank under CSR Initiative aiming to empower 10,000 Women with Market-Driven Nursing Skills by 2025

Nursing Kaushal Colleges in Jharkhand has already supported over 1500 women from marginalized communities.

MUMBAI (India CSR): In a significant CSR stride towards empowering women and addressing the healthcare sector’s acute skill shortage, HDFC Bank Parivartan has announced notable progress in its ambitious initiative to train 10,000 women in nursing by 2025. This announcement coincides with International Nurses Day, underscoring the initiative’s role in fostering a new generation of skilled healthcare professionals in India. Nursing Kaushal Colleges in Jharkhand has already supported over 1500 women from marginalized communities.

Nusrat Pathan, the Head of CSR at HDFC Bank informed,” By imparting education and skills training to these aspiring young women, we are proud partners in their journey to break free from the vicious cycle of poverty. Through vocational degrees and placement programs, we are addressing the critical need for skilled nursing professionals in Jharkhand, nurturing a generation of change-makers.”

HDFC Bank Parivartan stands at the forefront of HDFC Bank’s CSR initiatives, focusing on areas critical to sustainable growth, such as financial inclusion, education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability.

Bridging the Skill Gap in Healthcare

HDFC Bank Parivartan, in collaboration with the PanIIT Alumni Reach for India Foundation, has been actively addressing the shortage of trained nurses in India, which ranks 75 out of 133 countries in terms of nurse density according to the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy.

Through its Nursing Kaushal Colleges in Jharkhand, the initiative has already supported over 1500 women from marginalized communities, providing them with a government-accredited two-year Auxiliary Midwifery nursing program.

Success through Skilled Education

The success of the program is evident not just in the high pass rates of its students but also in their professional achievements post-graduation. With a remarkable 99.9% of participants excelling in their state exams, and 94% securing immediate employment offers, the program has effectively tripled the earning potential for many of its graduates compared to their family’s annual income.

Transforming Lives and Communities

The personal stories of these young women, like Varsha Kumari from a small village in Jharkhand, highlight the transformative impact of this initiative. From living in a single-income family reliant on agriculture, Varsha’s journey to becoming a top-ranked state nurse and a community nurse in Ranchi is not just a professional success but also a testament to her newfound ability to support and uplift her family.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

Nusrat Pathan, the Head of CSR at HDFC Bank, emphasizes the broader vision of the initiative, which is to provide high-quality vocational training that leads to sustainable employment, thereby breaking the cycle of poverty among India’s marginalized communities. By focusing on market-driven skills and comprehensive educational support, HDFC Bank Parivartan is making a significant impact on the healthcare landscape and the lives of thousands of young women.

“HDFC Bank Parivartan’s vision is to drive sustainable progress in society. We see quite often that lack of access to good quality vocational training leads to a situation where youth from marginalized communities are pushed to take up informal and unskilled jobs, which severely affects their earning potential.” – Nusrat Pathan, Head CSR, HDFC Bank

A Future Fueled by Skilled Professionals

As HDFC Bank Parivartan continues to expand its reach and refine its programs, the initiative is on track to achieve its goal of empowering 10,000 women with nursing skills by 2025. This commitment not only addresses the immediate needs of India’s healthcare sector but also sets a precedent for how targeted vocational training can effectuate socio-economic change.

Demand-led skilling is imperative if India has to capitalize on its demographic dividend. – Nusrat Pathan, Head CSR, HDFC Bank

Nursing Kaushal College project

To ensure the success of the Nursing Kaushal College project, HDFC Bank Parivartan along with its project partners, has provided comprehensive support, including infrastructure development, modern training facilities, industry-relevant curriculum, faculty training, and industry partnerships for internships and placements.

T Kalyan Chakravarthy, Executive Director PanIIT Alumni Reach for India Foundation said, “We have students like Alma Xalxo , who came from economically deprived backgrounds. Her family’s annual income was just Rs.36000. To make ends meet , the family depended on livestocks and farming , supporting nine members. After completing our training program, she secured a job at Apollo Homecare with an annual income of Rs. 1,88,724, more than four time increase in her family’s income. This showcases the transformative impact of our Nursing Kaushal College program.”
