CHENNAI (India CSR): To alleviate the drinking water challenges faced by over 150 fisherfolk families, the Adani Kattupalli Port, facilitated by the Adani Foundation, has recently commissioned a new Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant. This installation in Kattupalli Kuppam village, located in the Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, boasts a capacity of 1,000 liters per hour. The inauguration event, held on May 31, 2024, was led by Captain Madhanmohan, COO of Adani Kattupalli and Ennore Port. The ceremony was attended by the Adani Foundation’s CSR team, community leaders, panchayat members, and local residents, marking a significant stride towards sustainable community development.
Expanding Reach: Adani Foundation’s Ongoing Efforts in Water Purification
The newly inaugurated facility is part of a broader initiative by the Adani Foundation, which has previously established three other RO plants, each with a capacity of 1,000 LPH, featuring automated functionalities including ATM-based water vending machines in four different panchayats within the district. Additionally, the foundation has installed six RO plants, each with a capacity of 100 LPH, across five government schools and another at a government hospital in Pulicat, Tiruvallur. These efforts underline the foundation’s commitment to improving access to clean drinking water in education and healthcare settings, thereby enhancing the quality of life for the local communities.
Addressing Local Challenges: The Drive Behind the Initiative
The initiative to establish these RO plants stemmed from the critical need for fresh drinking water in the area. The locals, primarily from the fishing community, were previously compelled to purchase water due to the salinity and unsuitability of the underground water. This necessity forced community members to spend approximately Rs 30 daily to procure 20 liters of drinking water, cumulating to a monthly expenditure of Rs 800 to Rs 1,000. The installation of these RO plants not only provides a sustainable solution to this issue but also saves significant time and financial resources for the villagers.
Community Involvement and Sustainability: Ensuring Long-term Success
Post-inauguration, the management and upkeep of the RO plant have been entrusted to local leaders of the fisherfolk community. They are tasked with overseeing the plant’s overall maintenance and will collect a nominal maintenance fee of Rs 5 for every 20 liters of water. This community-led approach ensures not only the sustainability of the project but also empowers the locals by involving them directly in the operational aspects, thereby fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the facility.
