BANDUNG, INDONESIA: India made a notable mark at the World Boomerang Championship 2026, held at Sulaiman Airbase in Bandung, Indonesia, with four throwers representing the country through the Boomerang Association of India (BAI).
The Indian team comprised Daniel Joshua, Philip Sathyaraj, Sunil Uikey and Sathish D. The championship brought together 88 throwers from 13 different countries, making it a major international event for the sport.
Among the Indian participants, Philip Sathyaraj from Tamil Nadu secured 32nd rank, followed by Sathish D. in 43rd place, Daniel Joshua in 50th and Sunil Uikey in 76th place in the overall standings.
A major achievement for India came in the Long Distance category, where Daniel Joshua threw 93 metres with a perfect return, setting a new Indian record in the event. The performance was a significant milestone for Indian boomerang sport and demonstrated the growing competitive standards of Indian throwers on the international stage.
The Indian contingent also achieved success in the Aesthetic Competition, organised by the Oscar Cuartas Boomerang Foundation. Philip Sathyaraj won the First Prize in the Throwstick Making category and Third Prize in the Decoration category, while Daniel Joshua secured Third Prize in the Throwstick Submission category.
For Philip Sathyaraj and Sunil Uikey, the 2026 championship was another international appearance, as both had previously participated in the 2022 World Boomerang Championship held in Bordeaux, France.
Following the successful international participation, the Boomerang Association of India is planning to conduct a National Boomerang Championship towards the end of 2026. The championship is expected to provide Indian throwers with a larger competitive platform and help identify and develop talent from different parts of the country.
The association is also already looking ahead to the next World Championship. The World Boomerang Championship 2028 will be held in Perth, Australia, in March 2028, and BAI is planning to send a full Indian team to the event. The association intends to use the coming national championship and subsequent training and competitions to strengthen India’s representation and prepare more Indian athletes for the international stage.
The achievements in Bandung, including a new Indian Long Distance record and multiple awards in the Aesthetic Competition, mark another important step in the development and international growth of competitive boomerang sport in India.
