BEPL reports Rs 4.54 crore gross CSR obligation, uses Rs 4.19 crore prior-year set-off and spends Rs 9.42 crore on heritage and cultural projects

MUMBAI (India CSR®): Bhansali Engineering Polymers Limited (BEPL), a manufacturer of ABS and SAN thermoplastic resins, spent Rs 9.42 crore on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in FY 2025-26, primarily across projects related to the protection and promotion of national heritage, art and culture in Gujarat, Delhi and Maharashtra, according to information presented from the company’s annual report.

The company’s gross CSR obligation for the year was Rs 4.54 crore. After adjusting Rs 4.19 crore of eligible excess CSR spending carried forward from previous financial years, its net CSR requirement for FY 2025-26 stood at Rs 35.36 lakh.

Against this net requirement, BEPL reported actual CSR expenditure of Rs 9.42 crore, resulting in a fresh excess of approximately Rs 9.07 crore, according to the figures provided.

CSR Obligation

Under Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013, eligible companies are required to spend at least 2% of the average net profits of the three immediately preceding financial years on CSR activities specified under the law.

For FY 2025-26, BEPL reported an average net profit of Rs 226.95 crore for the purpose of calculating its CSR requirement.

The corresponding 2% gross CSR obligation was Rs 453.90 lakh, or approximately Rs 4.54 crore.

However, the company had Rs 418.54 lakh of eligible excess CSR expenditure available from preceding financial years. After applying this amount as a set-off, the remaining net obligation for FY 2025-26 was Rs 35.36 lakh.

BEPL subsequently spent Rs 942 lakh, or Rs 9.42 crore, on CSR activities during the financial year.

CSR Financial Summary

CSR ParameterFY 2025-26
Average Net ProfitRs 226.95 crore
Gross 2% CSR ObligationRs 4.54 crore
Prior-Year Excess Set-OffRs 4.19 crore
Net CSR ObligationRs 35.36 lakh
Actual CSR ExpenditureRs 9.42 crore
Fresh Excess SpendRs 9.07 crore
Administrative OverheadsNil
Impact Assessment ExpenditureNil

The difference between the gross and net obligation is significant for interpreting the company’s CSR position. The Rs 35.36 lakh figure represents the remaining obligation after applying the eligible prior-year set-off, rather than BEPL’s original 2% CSR requirement for the year.

Project Spending

According to the information provided, the entire Rs 9.42 crore CSR expenditure during FY 2025-26 was directed towards projects classified under the Schedule VII area covering protection of national heritage, art and culture.

The largest reported allocation was Rs 7.50 crore to Shanti Jin Sankul in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Another Rs 1.08 crore was contributed to Pravahchan Shrutitirth at Shankheswar in Patan district, Gujarat.

In Delhi, BEPL reported a contribution of Rs 58 lakh to Ahimsa Vishwa Bharti. The project was undertaken through an implementing agency carrying CSR Registration Number CSR00026199, according to the information supplied.

The company also contributed Rs 26 lakh to the JITO Gowalia Tank Chapter Foundation in Mumbai, Maharashtra, through an implementing agency with CSR Registration Number CSR00102909.

Together, the four reported allocations add up to the company’s total CSR expenditure of Rs 942 lakh for the year.

The source information reports nil administrative overheads and nil impact assessment expenditure during the year.

Prior-Year Set-Off

BEPL’s FY 2025-26 CSR calculation is also linked to excess spending accumulated in earlier years.

According to the figures provided, the company spent Rs 24.32 crore (Rs 2,432.49 lakh) in FY 2022-23 against a CSR requirement of Rs 6.66 crore (Rs 666.34 lakh).

This created an excess of approximately Rs 17.66 crore (Rs 1,766.15 lakh) that could be considered for set-off against eligible CSR obligations in succeeding years, subject to applicable CSR rules.

The company subsequently used Rs 7.41 crore (Rs 741.39 lakh) of the excess in FY 2023-24 and Rs 6.06 crore (Rs 606.22 lakh) in FY 2024-25.

The remaining Rs 4.19 crore was applied against the FY 2025-26 gross obligation of Rs 4.54 crore.

After this adjustment, the company’s net obligation stood at Rs 35.36 lakh. With actual spending of Rs 9.42 crore, BEPL reported a new excess of approximately Rs 9.07 crore.

Any future set-off of this amount would remain subject to the provisions and conditions prescribed under the Companies (Corporate Social Responsibility Policy) Rules.

CSR Governance

BEPL maintains a Board-level CSR Committee for oversight of its Corporate Social Responsibility activities.

As of March 31, 2026, the committee comprised B. M. Bhansali, Chairman and Managing Director, as its chairman; Jayesh B. Bhansali, Joint Managing Director cum CFO; and Taruna Niraj Kumbhar, Non-Executive Independent Director, as members.

Ashwin M. Patel, Company Secretary and General Manager (Legal), served as secretary to the CSR Committee.

According to the information supplied, the committee held a meeting on March 20, 2026, with all members attending.

The committee’s role includes reviewing CSR proposals, expenditure and implementation in line with the company’s CSR policy and applicable statutory requirements.

Business Performance

BEPL manufactures ABS and SAN resins used across different industrial applications.

For FY 2025-26, the company reported standalone net operational revenue of approximately Rs 1,276 crore, Profit Before Tax of Rs 247.77 crore and Profit After Tax of Rs 180.47 crore, according to the supplied annual report information.

Its reported net worth stood at approximately Rs 1,081.93 crore.

The company produced 71,601.50 tonnes during the year against installed production capacity of 75,000 tonnes, while sales volume was reported at 71,501.12 tonnes.

BEPL was also working on expanding its ABS production capacity from 75,000 tonnes per annum to 100,000 tonnes per annum, with commissioning targeted for September 2026, according to the source information.

These business figures provide financial context to the CSR obligation but are separate from the calculation and assessment of social impact generated by individual CSR projects.

Sustainability Measures

Beyond statutory CSR spending, BEPL reported environmental and employee-related measures at its manufacturing operations in Satnoor, Madhya Pradesh, and Abu Road, Rajasthan.

The supplied information states that Rs 4.43 crore was committed towards a 1,300 KW DC solar plant.

The company also reported occupational health and safety programmes, employee training, medical check-ups and blood donation activities.

These operational sustainability and employee welfare measures should be distinguished from statutory CSR expenditure unless specific expenditure is classified as eligible CSR activity under Schedule VII.

Impact Evidence

BEPL’s FY 2025-26 disclosures show actual CSR expenditure substantially above its remaining statutory requirement after the application of the prior-year set-off.

However, financial expenditure alone does not establish the scale or outcome of a CSR programme. The information supplied does not provide consolidated beneficiary numbers, detailed social outcome indicators or independent impact assessment findings for the four reported projects.

For readers and CSR researchers, such information would help assess how the Rs 9.42 crore expenditure translated into measurable community, cultural or heritage outcomes.

The financial disclosures nevertheless provide a clear picture of the company’s CSR accounting for the year: a gross obligation of Rs 4.54 crore, Rs 4.19 crore prior-year set-off, Rs 35.36 lakh net obligation, and Rs 9.42 crore actual CSR expenditure.
