Bastar Foods’ Innovative Venture: Mahua Tea and Kadha Reach UK, UAE, and USA

Once known primarily for its dense forests and tribal heritage, Bastar in Chhattisgarh has carved a new identity on the global stage with its Mahua tea. For generations, Mahua—a flower traditionally used to brew local liquor—has been a staple in Bastar’s culture, but now it’s being celebrated as a health elixir in cities like London, Dubai, and New York. On May 19, 2025, the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister’s Office lauded Bastar Foods for transforming Mahua into a wellness tea available in five distinct flavors, winning over health-conscious consumers worldwide. Beyond its health benefits, this initiative is creating jobs for local youth, making it a story of cultural pride and economic empowerment. Let’s dive into how Bastar’s Mahua tea is captivating the world.

Five Flavors Inspired by the Elements

Bastar Foods has crafted Mahua tea in five unique flavors, each inspired by the five elements—Earth, Water, Air, Space, and Fire. According to founder Razia Sheikh, these flavors aren’t just about taste; they’re designed with specific health benefits in mind. The Earth flavor combats fatigue, Water improves digestion, Air boosts immunity, Space alleviates body pain, and Fire helps address anemia. This innovative approach has resonated with consumers, not only in India but also in international markets like the UK, UAE, and the USA, where the tea is gaining a loyal following for its natural, Ayurvedic properties.

From Bastar to London: A Global Sensation

Mahua tea has transcended borders, with Bastar Foods exporting 50 tons of Mahua to London, where a dedicated production unit has been set up to meet rising demand. Locally, 20 tons of Mahua are being processed into tea, which is now a hit in Indian cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam, Raipur, and Delhi. Deepam Patel, a materials science engineer and co-founder of Bastar Foods, shared, “My background helped us understand Mahua’s potential. We positioned it as an Ayurvedic product, and now it’s being celebrated globally.” The tea’s success highlights how indigenous resources can find a place in the global wellness market.

A Health Powerhouse: Detox and Immunity Booster

Mahua tea isn’t just a beverage—it’s a wellness ritual. Razia Sheikh explains that the tea is made by brewing two teaspoons of dried Mahua flowers with a cup of water, ginger, tulsi leaves, and a touch of honey or jaggery. This concoction acts as a natural detox, strengthens the digestive system, and provides an energy boost by reducing fatigue. In colder regions like London, the tea is especially popular for its warming properties and immunity-boosting effects. Mahua’s Ayurvedic qualities, rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, make it a go-to drink for those seeking natural health solutions.

Empowering Local Youth with Opportunities

The Mahua tea project has brought significant economic benefits to Bastar’s local communities. The Forest Department has implemented a system to collect export-quality Mahua using nets in the jungles, followed by training programs for local youth in product manufacturing. Razia Sheikh notes that over 450 farmers and young individuals have directly benefited from the initiative, gaining stable income sources. This venture has not only created jobs but also uplifted the economic status of Bastar’s tribal population, earning support from the Chhattisgarh government to expand the program further.

Rising Global Demand and Future Plans

The popularity of Mahua tea is soaring, with demand growing in the UK, UAE, and the USA. Bastar Foods is now planning to enter markets in Australia and Canada within the next two years, while doubling production through a new unit in Hyderabad. The tea is also available on e-commerce platforms, making it accessible to a broader audience. With 2024 data showing a 35% increase in global demand for herbal teas, Mahua tea is well-positioned to capture a significant share of this market, blending tradition with modern wellness trends.

Bastar’s New Legacy: A Sip of Wellness

Bastar’s Mahua has shed its old reputation as a mere ingredient for liquor, emerging as a symbol of health and heritage in the form of tea and kadha. From London to Delhi, this tea is winning hearts with its unique flavors and health benefits. Bastar Foods’ initiative not only empowers local youth but also brings Bastar’s rich culture and natural resources to the global stage.
