NEW DELHI (India CSR): On the occasion of the 50th World Environment Day, influential figures in the construction industry are emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices and raising their voice in favor of the environment.
Sandhya Naidu Janardhan, Founder & MD of Community Design Agency, has drawn attention to the substantial environmental footprint of the construction industry, which contributes nearly 40% to the total carbon footprint worldwide.
“As architects, engineers, real estate developers, and other professionals in allied fields, we have an obligation to be more responsible, careful, and thoughtful in how we design and build,” Janardhan stated.
Having worked closely with some of the world’s most vulnerable and marginalised communities, Janardhan has observed the immediate and alarming impacts of climate change first-hand. “Our aim should not only be to build safe and healthy spaces for people but also ensure that they are safe and healthy for the environment,” she affirmed.
Most concerning is that these communities, which are disproportionately affected by climate change, often lack representation in dialogues concerning environmental issues. Janardhan calls for change: “We must strive to empower them to have greater agency in these conversations.”
World Environment Day is a global platform for raising awareness and taking action on pressing environmental issues.
