BENGALURU: Tesco Bengaluru, the technology and retail operations team for Tesco worldwide, kicked off World Environment Day celebrations from June 5, 2017 and embarked on a month-long calendar of activities.
This year’s theme Connecting People to Nature set the tone for a series of activities held during the month that focused on raising awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
Projects like E-waste collection drives, old footwear recycling and afforestation drives took place with the aim to encourage colleagues to help build a sustainable future by collectively driving impact on the community, as well as within the Tesco Bengaluru campus.
With Tesco’s global commitment to sustainability through reduction of food waste and its carbon footprint, there is a greater focus sustainable practices. Guided by the motto of ‘every little help makes a difference’, ideas and thoughts shared on Tesco Bengaluru’s extensive internal platforms, by colleagues, provided impetus to make sure that each idea could be well-executed to induce a positive difference towards the community at large.
“At Tesco, we believe that every little help makes a big difference. It is a value we live by to ensure we serve our customers, colleagues and their communities a little better every day. Our consistent and continual commitment to improve the lives of the communities we touch is what keeps us going. Celebrating World Environment Day and leading with initiatives such as CSR Impact, a collaborative forum that brings together companies and implementation partners to focus on solutions, we are hopeful of creating a robust society. Our colleagues are the backbone of our community outreach and impact. Through inclusive and focused initiatives, we empower them to make a collective difference”, says Aniisu K Verghese, Senior Manager – Corporate Communications and CSR.
Activities for the month included a sapling plantation drive at ITPL, a photo sharing project ‘Share your Favourite Green Spot!’ encouraging colleagues to share images of their favourite nature spots, Ideas for Change! – where colleagues could actively contribute their ‘green’ ideas, an environment day painting competition for the children of Tesco colleagues, an e-waste collection drive on campus and Enviro Exhibition – that showcased environment friendly products and services that colleagues could make use of. The activities also included a partnership with Green Sole, whereby colleagues donated their old foot wear, which will be refurbished and donated to the children from the eight schools Tesco Bengaluru supports.
Tesco Bengaluru has partnered with NGOs and leveraged digital platforms such as Yammer Chat to keep the activities engaging on a wider social and cultural network that will weigh in on its CSR journey for World Environment Day, 2017.
