UDAIPUR (India CSR®): Hindustan Zinc Limited, the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and one of the world’s top ten silver producers, has restored 1,105 hectares of land so far, marking significant progress in its efforts to integrate ecological restoration with responsible mining.
Equivalent to more than 1,500 football fields, the rehabilitated area reflects the company’s approach of progressively rehabilitating mining and operational landscapes through reclamation, plantation, biodiversity enhancement and sustainable land-use practices. These interventions form part of Hindustan Zinc’s Sustainability Goals 2030 and its broader commitment to creating long-term ecological value alongside business growth.

Complementing its land rehabilitation efforts, Hindustan Zinc has planted 8.5 lakh saplings since 2020 up to FY2026, including 1.14 lakh saplings during FY26. The company has developed Miyawaki plantations across Rajpura Dariba, Chanderiya, Debari and Kayad, while initiatives such as Green Zawar extend afforestation and environmental awareness into surrounding communities. Hindustan Zinc has also partnered with TERI for a 250-hectare ecological restoration project inclusive of 22.5 ha. Jarofix yard rehabilitation and natural forest development at its Chanderiya Lead-Zinc Smelter Complex in Rajasthan, further strengthening its science-led approach to landscape rehabilitation.
Water stewardship is another key pillar of the company’s sustainability strategy. Hindustan Zinc is a certified 3.32x Water Positive organisation, improving from 2.41x and follows Zero Liquid Discharge practices across its operations. Operating in water-stressed Rajasthan, the company meets more than 30% of its water requirement through treated sewage. Under its Sustainability Goals 2030, Hindustan Zinc is working towards reducing freshwater consumption by 50% from its 2020 baseline and sourcing 100% low-quality water for its smelting operations.
The company is simultaneously accelerating the decarbonisation of its operations. Renewable power accounted for ~18% in FY26 and Hindustan Zinc is targeting 70% renewable power by FY28, supported by a 530 MW renewable Power Delivery Agreement. Its climate roadmap includes SBTi-approved targets to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% and Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030, from a 2020 baseline, as it progresses towards Net Zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. Hindustan Zinc has also launched EcoZen, Asia’s first low carbon zinc, with 75% lower carbon footprint as compared to global average.
