A detailed look at Svatantra Microfin Private Limited’s CSR initiatives, highlighting investments in healthcare, women empowerment, and community development in FY 2024-25

NEW DELHI (India CSR): In many rural parts of India, access to financial services is only one part of the journey toward stability. For many families, especially women entrepreneurs, real progress depends on better healthcare, education, and community support. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives often help fill these gaps. Svatantra Microfin Private Limited, a leading non-banking financial company focused on microfinance, has outlined its social efforts in its annual report for the financial year 2024-25. According to the company’s annual report, Svatantra reported a total CSR spending commitment of Rs 7.82 crore on a consolidated basis during the year. The report highlights how these funds were used across key areas such as healthcare, women empowerment, education, and environmental sustainability.

CSR Obligation and Spending Structure

As per the Companies Act, 2013, companies are required to spend at least 2% of their average net profits over the last three financial years on CSR activities. According to the annual report, Svatantra Microfin Private Limited reported an average net profit of over Rs 173 crore for the relevant period.

Based on this, the company’s standalone CSR obligation for FY 2024-25 was calculated at approximately Rs 3.46 crore. The report states that the company adopted a combination of direct spending and allocation toward ongoing projects.

Out of the total obligation, around Rs 1.59 crore was spent directly on CSR initiatives during the year. The remaining Rs 1.87 crore was transferred to an Unspent CSR Account. According to the report, this amount has been earmarked for ongoing projects that will be implemented over a period of up to three financial years.

On a consolidated level, including its subsidiary, the company’s total CSR commitment reached Rs 7.82 crore. This reflects the broader scale of operations and social investment across the group.

Healthcare and Mental Health Support

Healthcare was another key focus area. According to the report, Svatantra Microfin supported healthcare initiatives aimed at improving access to medical services in underserved areas.

The annual report states that over 800 individuals with mental health conditions received support during the year. These initiatives included access to treatment and care through partnerships with healthcare providers.

In addition, the company facilitated telemedicine services, allowing individuals in remote locations to consult doctors and receive medical advice. This initiative helps bridge the gap between rural communities and healthcare professionals.

The report highlights that healthcare support remains essential for improving overall quality of life in the communities served by the company.

Supporting Livelihoods and Traditional Skills

Another important area of CSR activity was the support for traditional livelihoods. According to the annual report, Svatantra Microfin extended assistance to artisans, including weavers.

The report states that around 125 weavers benefited from these initiatives. Support included access to resources and opportunities that help sustain traditional crafts while improving income levels.

Such initiatives are important in preserving cultural heritage while also supporting economic stability in rural areas.

Investment in Education and Community Programs

Education and community development also formed part of the CSR strategy. According to the report, the company supported programs aimed at improving access to education and skill development.

One of the key initiatives includes projects focused on supporting young girls through education and training. These programs are implemented in collaboration with partner organizations and aim to create long-term opportunities.

Environmental Sustainability Initiatives

Environmental sustainability was another area covered under CSR activities. According to the annual report, the company undertook tree plantation drives during the year.

The report states that more than 7,500 trees were planted as part of these efforts. These initiatives aim to contribute to environmental conservation and promote awareness about sustainability.

Such activities are aligned with broader goals of maintaining ecological balance in rural areas.

Sports and Youth Development

In addition to core areas like healthcare and education, the company also supported sports initiatives. According to the report, a small number of athletes received support during the year.

These initiatives aim to encourage young talent and provide opportunities for individuals to pursue sports at higher levels.

While this is a smaller component of overall CSR spending, it reflects a broader approach to community development.

Partnerships and Implementation Approach

The annual report highlights that many CSR initiatives were implemented through partnerships with foundations and non-profit organizations. One such collaboration includes work with the Ananya Birla Foundation.

Funds allocated to ongoing projects are being used to support long-term initiatives focused on education, healthcare, and empowerment. According to the report, this approach allows for better planning and sustained impact.

The company’s strategy includes both immediate interventions and long-term projects, ensuring a balance between short-term support and lasting outcomes.

Governance and Oversight

CSR activities at Svatantra Microfin are overseen by a dedicated CSR Committee. According to the annual report, the committee is responsible for planning, monitoring, and reviewing CSR initiatives.

The report states that all CSR activities were carried out in compliance with regulatory requirements. Funds allocated for ongoing projects were transferred to the Unspent CSR Account as per the law.

The company has also provided detailed disclosures on spending and project areas, ensuring transparency.

Measurable Social Impact

The CSR initiatives undertaken during FY 2024-25 reached a wide range of beneficiaries. According to the annual report, programs related to healthcare, women empowerment, and livelihood support impacted several hundred individuals directly.

The report highlights that these initiatives aim to improve both economic and social conditions in the communities served by the company.
