Singapore (India CSR): In a groundbreaking move towards more sustainable aviation, the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group has embarked on a significant partnership with Neste, a global leader in renewable fuel solutions. This collaboration marks a significant step for the airline industry in Asia and highlights an ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

A New Era of Fueling the Future

The agreement includes the purchase of 1,000 tonnes of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™, positioning SIA and its low-cost carrier Scoot as pioneers in the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at Changi Airport. This initiative not only underscores the airlines’ dedication to sustainability but also sets a precedent for environmental responsibility in the sector.

Integration into Changi Airport’s Infrastructure

Under the terms of the partnership, Neste will supply the SAF in two batches blended with conventional jet fuel, meeting all required safety standards. The first delivery is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024, followed by another in the fourth quarter. This SAF will be directly integrated into Changi Airport’s existing fuel hydrant system, demonstrating a seamless transition towards greener fuel alternatives.

Expanding Singapore’s SAF Capabilities

The delivery coincides with the recent expansion of Neste’s refinery in Singapore, now the largest SAF production facility worldwide with a capacity of one million tonnes per year. This expansion is pivotal as it enhances Singapore’s position as a key player in the global SAF market, ensuring the availability of low-emission fuel options for the aviation industry.

Reducing Carbon Footprints

Neste’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is produced entirely from renewable waste and residue raw materials. It is capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle compared to traditional jet fuel. This significant reduction is vital as the aviation industry moves towards more sustainable operational practices.

Comments from Leadership

Alexander Kueper, Vice President of Renewable Aviation at Neste, expressed pride in this collaboration, “We are proud to support Singapore Airlines and Scoot with our integrated supply capabilities at Changi Airport. This milestone enhances our commitment to helping the aviation sector and regional governments meet their emissions reduction targets.”

Lee Wen Fen, Chief Sustainability Officer at Singapore Airlines, highlighted the importance of partnerships in achieving long-term sustainability goals, “This agreement with Neste aligns with our target to incorporate a minimum of 5% sustainable aviation fuel into our total fuel uplift by 2030. Collaborative efforts are crucial for our decarbonisation strategy and for fostering a more sustainable future for aviation.”

Encouraging Wider SAF Adoption

Starting in May 2024, SIA will also offer 1,000 SAF Book & Claim Units (BCUs) for sale to its corporate clients. Each BCU represents one tonne of neat SAF and its associated CO2 reduction benefits, enabling businesses to contribute directly to environmental sustainability. This initiative is supported by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) Book & Claim system, ensuring the credibility and traceability of the environmental benefits claimed by purchasers.

5 FAQs around Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Here are five detailed FAQs regarding the agreement between Singapore Airlines Group and Neste for the supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF):

1. What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and why is it important?

  • Answer: Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a biofuel used to power aircraft that is made from sustainable resources, such as waste oils from biological origin, agriculture, or forestry. SAF is crucial as it can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of aviation fuel. In this specific agreement, the SAF supplied by Neste is made from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over the fuel’s lifecycle compared to conventional jet fuel. This makes it a critical component in the aviation industry’s efforts to combat climate change.

2. How will the SAF be delivered to Singapore Airlines and Scoot?

  • Answer: The SAF will be delivered in a blended form directly to Changi Airport’s fuel hydrant system. Neste will blend the neat SAF with conventional jet fuel to meet the required safety specifications. The delivery will occur in two separate batches; the first batch is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024, and the second batch for the fourth quarter of 2023.

3. What makes this agreement between Singapore Airlines Group and Neste significant?

  • Answer: This agreement marks several significant milestones: It is the first time that SAF produced at Neste’s refinery in Singapore will be supplied directly to airlines at Changi Airport. Furthermore, Singapore Airlines and Scoot will become the first airlines to receive this locally produced SAF at the airport. This move not only supports Singapore Airlines’ sustainability goals but also reinforces Singapore’s position as a leading aviation hub with advanced sustainable fuel capabilities.

4. What are the broader environmental goals of Singapore Airlines Group with regards to SAF?

  • Answer: Singapore Airlines Group aims to include at least 5% SAF in its total fuel uplift by 2030. This initiative is part of the airline’s broader commitment to reduce its carbon emissions and contribute to the global decarbonization of the aviation industry. Additionally, starting from May 2024, Singapore Airlines will offer SAF Book & Claim Units (BCUs) to its corporate customers, allowing them to claim the carbon dioxide reduction benefits associated with SAF usage.

5. How does Neste produce its SAF and what are its environmental benefits?

  • Answer: Neste produces its SAF using a Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) technology, which involves hydroprocessing fat or oil feedstocks. The SAF by Neste, known as Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™, is made from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials. The use of these materials not only avoids direct competition with food supply but also ensures a significant reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel. This reduction is critical for mitigating the environmental impact of air travel and advancing towards a more sustainable aviation industry.
