Singapore (India CSR): In a groundbreaking move towards more sustainable aviation, the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group has embarked on a significant partnership with Neste, a global leader in renewable fuel solutions. This collaboration marks a significant step for the airline industry in Asia and highlights an ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

A New Era of Fueling the Future

The agreement includes the purchase of 1,000 tonnes of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™, positioning SIA and its low-cost carrier Scoot as pioneers in the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at Changi Airport. This initiative not only underscores the airlines’ dedication to sustainability but also sets a precedent for environmental responsibility in the sector.

Integration into Changi Airport’s Infrastructure

Under the terms of the partnership, Neste will supply the SAF in two batches blended with conventional jet fuel, meeting all required safety standards. The first delivery is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024, followed by another in the fourth quarter. This SAF will be directly integrated into Changi Airport’s existing fuel hydrant system, demonstrating a seamless transition towards greener fuel alternatives.

Expanding Singapore’s SAF Capabilities

The delivery coincides with the recent expansion of Neste’s refinery in Singapore, now the largest SAF production facility worldwide with a capacity of one million tonnes per year. This expansion is pivotal as it enhances Singapore’s position as a key player in the global SAF market, ensuring the availability of low-emission fuel options for the aviation industry.

Reducing Carbon Footprints

Neste’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is produced entirely from renewable waste and residue raw materials. It is capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle compared to traditional jet fuel. This significant reduction is vital as the aviation industry moves towards more sustainable operational practices.

Alexander Kueper, Vice President of Renewable Aviation at Neste, expressed pride in this collaboration, “We are proud to support Singapore Airlines and Scoot with our integrated supply capabilities at Changi Airport. This milestone enhances our commitment to helping the aviation sector and regional governments meet their emissions reduction targets.”

Lee Wen Fen, Chief Sustainability Officer at Singapore Airlines, highlighted the importance of partnerships in achieving long-term sustainability goals, “This agreement with Neste aligns with our target to incorporate a minimum of 5% sustainable aviation fuel into our total fuel uplift by 2030. Collaborative efforts are crucial for our decarbonisation strategy and for fostering a more sustainable future for aviation.”

Encouraging Wider SAF Adoption

Starting in May 2024, SIA will also offer 1,000 SAF Book & Claim Units (BCUs) for sale to its corporate clients. Each BCU represents one tonne of neat SAF and its associated CO2 reduction benefits, enabling businesses to contribute directly to environmental sustainability. This initiative is supported by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) Book & Claim system, ensuring the credibility and traceability of the environmental benefits claimed by purchasers.
