JSP Foundation Promotes Sustainability and Community Benefit through Triple Bottom Line Approach


New Delhi: JSP Foundation, the corporate social responsibility (CSR) division of Jindal Steel and Power (JSP), was recognized for its healthcare initiative at the 11th India CSR Awards in New Delhi on December 17, 2022. This award recognizes the efforts of the foundation to address healthcare issues and improve the well-being of disadvantaged and rural populations through a range of programs and interventions.

These initiatives include the Kishori Express program for adolescent girls, Project Vatsalya for women’s and children’s health, Tele-medicine Centers, Mobile Health Care services, an HIV and AIDS Awareness program, the Swasti Express program for senior citizens, and Trucker’s Eye Care services. The recognition at the India CSR Awards highlights the impact and success of JSP Foundation’s healthcare initiatives in improving the lives of individuals and communities.

The organisation was honoured at the 13th India CSR Leadership Summit by Chief Guest Shri R.K. Sinha, Honโ€™ble Former Rajya Sabha Member and, Founder & CMD of Security & Intelligence Services (India) Limited (SIS) during the 13th India CSR Leadership Summit in the presence of Dr. Shalini Rajneesh, Additional Chief Secretary to Govt., Planning, Program Monitoring & Statistics Dept., Govt. of Karnataka, and Rusen Kumar, Founder and Managing Editor of India CSR.

The foundation has been consciously operating in a framework of Triple Bottom Line (TBL) encompassing its focus on People, Planet, and Profit and therefore has developed an operating system that is compatible with the environment as well as with the community needs. Because of its synergetic community partnership, it has ensured community benefits through a structured community need analysis approach.

Its CSR interventions are aligned with 17 Sustainable Development Goals launched by United Nations in 2015. The Foundation has been addressing 16 out of the 17 defined UNSDGs. JSP Foundation is dedicated to the cause of humanity and is focused on improving the Human Development Index by way of positioning itself as a parenting force of various Social Change Agents operating at the ground level.

Contribution of JSP Foundation towards Health

Health is a state of complete physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing, which consists in maintaining the body as much as possible by following daily advice and preventive measures to reduce the possibility of diseases. Having equal access to quality healthcare through a basic human right, many people are left behind due to varied socio economic reasons. People who do not have access to healthcare are stuck in a vicious circle of poverty and poor health, which can even lead to social instability.

Looking to the context of inadvertence, JSP Foundation initiated many health interventions pertaining to the health issues for socio-economically deprived and rural people of all age group like infant, children, adolescent, and adult and old age people. The foundation provides both curative and preventive health care services across its project locations like Angul, Barbil, Tensa, Kasia,  Jerledapuru, Patratu and Raigarh.

Kishori Express of JSP Foundation is a flagship project addressing the issues of anaemia amongst adolescent girls (10 to 19 years). The intervention takes care of adolescent girlsโ€™ healthcare, hygiene and awareness at the doorsteps by trained service providers through a medically equipped customised vehicle called Kishori Express.

This programme is implemented in 886 villages of Angul of Odisha, Patratu of Jharkhand, and Nuh of Haryana and has yet benefitted more than 2 lakh adolescent girls. Project Vatsalya of JSP Foundation, focuses on women health and safe motherhood, disseminates health awareness and ensures safe motherhood by strengthening existing health services directed towards reducing MMR, IMR and promoting ANC & PNC.ย  With a geographical coverage of 81 villages, it has benefitted more than 2.6 lakh women and children.

In Tele-medicine Centers, doctors use electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support long-distance clinical healthcare to patients. On an average, each year 25000 people are benefitted through this service. With an objective of catering the health needs of poor and tribal people, located in far flung or desolate or forest areas, Mobile Health Care service is provided. This has yet benefitted 3,50,000+ people from 90 operational villages. With a mandate of โ€˜Know AIDS, No AIDS, the HIV and AIDS Awareness programme is being implemented across the project locations and has yet benefitted more than 4 lakhs of people through integrated counselling, testing and referral services under NACO guidelines.

Swasti Express is a unique initiative aims to provide customised health care services to the senior citizens through a medically equipped vehicle called โ€œSwasti Expressโ€. Each year, it caters physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing of 5000+ elderly people across project locations. Under Truckerโ€™s Eye Care services vision screening and refraction services are rendered through a dedicated team of optometrist, and benefits 4000 truck drivers on each year. JSP Foundation supports to more than 10,000 patients on every year who are economically deprived and belong to its project locations.

In Vector Borne Disease Control and Awareness Drives, health and sanitation-based programmes towards preventing vector borne diseases are orgnasied on regular basis at across project locations, benefits over 2.5 lakhs of rural people. Chirnajeevi project focuses at reducing child malnutrition of children between 5 years, through awareness drives, periodic health check-ups and facilitating nutrition services.

This has yet benefitted more than 15000 children and mothers. Perceiving the incidences of Reproductive Tract Infection (RTI) and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) and other menstrual health related problems among rural women and adolescent girl, Shubhangi project is institutionalised which has been benefitting more than 50000 adolescent girls and women of 455 operational villages. Under Sneh initiative, 450 senior citizens are supported with rehabilitation, physical and mental health services in Elderly Care Center.

Addressing Emergent Health Needs during Covid-19 Pandemic

Natural and human-caused disasters affect millions of people across the globe each year which impact in all forms of catastrophic loss of life like loss of human life, psychological, emotional, and economic distresses. Covid-19 being a global disaster created a chaotic situation across the globe that threatens the existing social order. India was not free from it. This hit India towards the end of March’20 and the entire country was at a standstill due to the lockdown. As a responsible Corporate, JSP provided need-based support services to Covid-19 affected people not only in its project locations but also across the country.

During the second wave of the pandemic JSP supplied over 5000 tonnes of Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) to various health centres in more than 13 Indian states to save human lives in coordination with the Government, through Oxygen Express by Indian Railways and Cryogenic Tankers. During Covid-19, Mission Zero Hunger programme of JSP Foundation, benefitted over 20 lakhs needy people, truck drivers and stranded labourers with hot cooked foods and dry rations.ย  Health Care Services through OP Jindal Hospital & Research Center:

To combat Covid, JSP earmarked 702 oxygen supportive beds in Fortis OP Jindal Hospital & Research Centre and different Covid Care Centers established across project locations. More than 20 lakhs people from rural and tribal villages were sensitized towards prevention and precaution of Covid-19 pandemic. It has organized awareness sessions, distributed pamphlets, AVs, social media, radio and audio jingles in local dialects for disseminating message towards prevention of Covid-19. In collaboration with Govt. and CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, facilitated and ensured vaccination of more than 1.2 lakhs individuals across our operational areas.

Asha: The Hope Center extended its online support services over home exercise protocols, therapeutic Skills, and pre-vocational learning activities for more than 5000 children across the project locations.
