Undeniably, India has witnessed a significant increase in demand for cloud-based services over the last couple of years which holds true on a global scale as well. It’s no mystery that Covid-19, which has compelled many organizations to function digitally, has become a critical driving factor of this demand of data centres in India.

According to a new analysis co-authored by real estate services firm Anarock-Mace, India is most likely to see an addition of several major hyperscale data centres over the next 3 years[1], with a combined  IT power capacity of over 1,400 MW and facilities spanning over more than 16 million sq. ft.

What Is Fuelling India’s Digital Growth?

The Indian government began the Digital India initiative in 2015, a programme aiming to transform India through an economy based on robust digital technology[2]. Ever since, India has been concentrating on closing the technical gap and enabling the country’s digital transformation to penetrate even the most rural areas.

As a result, India reported 560 million internet members in 2018, just three years after the programme’s initiation, ranking second only to China. And by 2025, this number is predicted to reach 850 million[3].

India’s public cloud industry has benefited from the increase in the number of online users. India’s public cloud industry was predicted to be worth $2.6 billion in 2018, and this figure is expected to reach $8 billion by 2023.

Like the remainder of the Asia-Pacific region, India has clearly recognized and adopted cloud technology at an incredible rate. Moreover, the public cloud is predicted to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 36% in the APAC area through 2023, and that would be a modest projection[4].

As per Frost & Sullivan’s recently conducted analysis[5], growing cloud investment and colocation services providers are the key players driving in India and the global data centre industry. The analysis also shows that continuing high levels of technology deployment across all industry verticals would lead to an abundance of data produced, thus stimulating the necessity for data processing and storage capability. Consequently, leading to increased construction of large number of data centres varying from enterprise to large-scale cloud.

Accelerated Demand for Digitization and Sustaining Infrastructure

Given the speed with which India is digitizing, the country’s most pressing challenge remains, ‘How the country plans to assist this ever-increasing growth while ensuring that the digitization doesn’t grow faster than the capabilities of the existing infrastructure allow?’

If the country fails to give a satisfactory response to this critical question, then there’s no doubt it will stifle India’s digital progress and, as a result, its economic development. So, what’s the solution to this? A straightforward answer would be – Hyperscale data centres in India!

When a data centre has more than 5,000 servers and covers more than 10,000 square feet, it is categorized as ‘hyperscale’ by market research firm International Data Corporation. Several hyperscale data centres have the capacity to house millions of servers.

The need for hyperscale data centres in India has risen significantly over the last two years as even more enterprises migrate their IT infrastructure to the cloud, fuelled in part by the ever-rising need for application-based solutions and OTT platforms.[6]

Hyperscale Data Centres will be Key to Sustaining India’s Digital Deluge

Hyperscale data centres would be essential if India is to sustain its current rate of digital expansion and achieve its goals.

Hyperscalers are renowned for their sheer size and scalability benefits and are indeed the answer to the question mentioned above, as they allow countries like India to digitize at breakneck speed and with an almost unlimited scalability prospect.

As Indian organizations across industries continue to grow their operations, increasing the quantity of data consumption and storage, the demand for more storage capacity will become critical. As a result, these organizations will be able to ramp up their existing digital competencies and capabilities while growing their business with the help of hyperscale data centres.

One of the primary advantages of hyperscale data centres in India is that enterprises may scale up their operations and data storage with utmost reliability and scalability while focusing on their core business.

Having the ability to scale up or down, as and when needed, implies that businesses don’t have to continuously reconfigure their cloud infrastructure as they expand, which can be an expensive and time-consuming operation. Besides, hyperscale data centres in India will also enable businesses to benefit from the knowledge of organizations specializing in the design, construction, and operation of these hyperscale data centres.
