Vedanta utilised nearly 400 crore units of clean energy in FY26, reused 8.5 crore cubic metres of water and planted over 40 lakh trees.

NEW DELHI (India CSR): Marking World Nature Conservation Day, Vedanta Group, one of the world’s leading metals, oil & gas, critical minerals, power and technology conglomerates, reaffirmed its commitment to nature-positive growth by generating and utilising nearly 400 crore (4 billion) units of clean energy during FY2025-26. This has contributed to 3.6 crore tonnes of cumulative avoided carbon emissions since FY2020-21, equivalent to taking nearly 80 lakh passenger vehicles off the road for a year. Through its integrated ESG strategy, Vedanta is accelerating decarbonisation while advancing responsible water stewardship, ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation, supporting India’s climate and environmental ambitions.

Clean Energy

Nature conservation begins with reducing environmental impact. During FY2025-26, Vedanta’s renewable energy consumption increased by nearly 450% over FY2020-21 levels, while emissions intensity across its metals and mining businesses reduced by nearly 14%. As the company progresses towards its goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 or sooner, it continues to strengthen its four-pronged decarbonisation strategy through:

  1. operational efficiency
  2. cleaner fuels
  3. renewable energy adoption and
  4. investments in nature-based carbon sequestration.

Water Conservation

Complementing its decarbonisation efforts, Vedanta has embedded responsible water stewardship across its operations, recognising water as a critical enabler of healthy ecosystems and climate resilience. The company has developed over 100 water conservation structures, including rainwater harvesting systems, check dams and settling ponds, alongside aquifer recharge, pond rejuvenation and watershed restoration initiatives. During FY2025-26, Vedanta recycled and reused over 8.5 crore cubic metres of water, enough to meet the annual domestic water needs of nearly 50 lakh Indian households – while achieving nearly 40% water recycling across its operations.

Afforestation

Building on this integrated approach to natural resource management, Vedanta continues to restore ecosystems through large-scale afforestation and ecological regeneration. Since 2021, the company has planted over 40 lakh trees across its operations. As one of the first South Asian corporates to join the World Economic Forum’s 1t.org global movement, Vedanta is helping scale global efforts to conserve, restore and grow one trillion trees. Across several locations, the company has also adopted the Miyawaki afforestation model, using native species to create dense, self-sustaining forests that accelerate ecosystem recovery while enhancing biodiversity.

Biodiversity Conservation

Beyond ecosystem restoration, Vedanta is advancing biodiversity conservation through scientific ecological management. Biodiversity assessments across its operational sites have enabled location-specific Biodiversity Management Plans aligned with the company’s No Net Loss and Net Positive Impact roadmap. These initiatives include habitat enhancement, wetland restoration, mangrove conservation, elephant corridor protection, invasive species management and long-term ecological monitoring supported by GIS mapping, independent assessments and community participation.

On World Nature Conservation Day, Vedanta reaffirms that sustainable growth and environmental stewardship must go hand in hand. By integrating clean energy, responsible water management, ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation into its business strategy, the company continues to strengthen ecological resilience while advancing its purpose of Transforming for Good and contributing to a more sustainable future for India.
