Early Life and Roots in Tajpur, Bihar

A Village Boy with Big Dreams

Born on March 27, 2011, in Tajpur, a quiet village in Bihar’s Samastipur district, Vaibhav Suryavanshi grew up in a modest farming family. His father, Sanjeev Suryavanshi, a farmer and part-time journalist, recognized his son’s passion for cricket at the tender age of four. Sanjeev built a small cricket ground in their backyard, nurturing Vaibhav’s talent with unwavering support. His mother, a homemaker whose name remains private, and elder brother have also been pillars of encouragement. Despite financial challenges, including selling farmland to fund Vaibhav’s training, the family’s sacrifices laid the foundation for his extraordinary journey.

A Record-Breaking Domestic Debut

Rewriting Ranji Trophy History

Vaibhav’s cricketing ascent began in earnest in January 2024, when he made his first-class debut for Bihar against Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. At just 12 years and 284 days old, he became the second-youngest player to feature in the tournament for Bihar and the fourth-youngest overall in Indian cricket history, surpassing icons like Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh, who debuted at 15.

Though his initial Ranji performances were modest, Vaibhav’s potential was undeniable. Later that year, he debuted in T20 cricket for Bihar against Rajasthan in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at 13 years and 241 days, setting another record as the youngest T20 cricketer. In December 2024, he became the youngest Indian to play List A cricket, scoring a fiery 71 off 42 balls against Baroda in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. These milestones showcased his versatility across formats.

Shining on the International Stage

A Blazing Under-19 Career

Vaibhav’s international breakthrough came in September 2024, when he debuted for India’s Under-19 team against Australia in a Youth Test in Chennai. He stunned the cricketing world by scoring a 58-ball century, the fastest by an Indian in youth Tests and the second-fastest in under-19 international cricket. His 104-run knock, which ended in a run-out, announced his arrival as a global talent.

At the 2024 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup, Vaibhav continued his explosive form, smashing 76 off 46 balls against UAE and 67 off 36 balls against Sri Lanka in the semi-final. His 176 runs at an average of 44 in the tournament solidified his reputation as a clutch performer. These performances caught the attention of IPL scouts, setting the stage for his historic franchise career.

IPL 2025: A Star is Born

Youngest IPL Debutant and Centurion

In November 2024, Vaibhav made history as the youngest player to secure an IPL contract, signed by Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.1 crore (US$130,000) after a bidding war with Delhi Capitals. His trials in Nagpur, where he smashed eight sixes and four fours under the guidance of batting coach Vikram Rathour, convinced the Royals of his potential.

On April 19, 2025, Vaibhav debuted for Rajasthan Royals against Lucknow Super Giants, replacing injured captain Sanju Samson as an Impact Player. At 14 years and 23 days, he became the youngest IPL debutant ever and the first player born after the tournament’s inception in 2008. He announced his arrival in style, smashing a six off his first ball from Shardul Thakur and scoring 34 off 20 balls, earning praise from commentators like Ambati Rayudu, who called it “unimaginable.”

The pinnacle of Vaibhav’s IPL journey came on April 28, 2025, against Gujarat Titans at Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Chasing 210, he blazed a 35-ball century, the second-fastest in IPL history (behind Chris Gayle’s 30-ball ton) and the fastest by an Indian. His 101 off 38 balls, featuring 11 sixes and seven fours, powered Rajasthan to an eight-wicket victory and earned him the Player of the Match award. At 14 years and 32 days, he became the youngest centurion in men’s T20 cricket, breaking Vijay Zol’s record. He also set records for the youngest IPL half-century, the most sixes by an Indian in an IPL innings (tied with Murali Vijay), and the fastest IPL fifty (17 balls).

Playing Style and Mentorship

A Fearless Southpaw with a 360-Degree Game

Vaibhav’s batting is defined by fearless aggression and impeccable timing. As a left-handed batter, he thrives against both pace and spin, with a knack for clearing the ropes. His ability to flick wristy shots, loft cover drives, and muscle sixes over mid-wicket has drawn comparisons to modern T20 greats. He also bowls slow left-arm orthodox, adding versatility to his skill set. Rajasthan Royals’ spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule praised his “360-degree game” and fearless mindset, noting that Vaibhav “doesn’t care who is bowling to him.”

Under the mentorship of Rahul Dravid, Rajasthan Royals’ head coach, and alongside teammates like Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav is honing his craft. Dravid’s guidance, combined with the Royals’ tradition of nurturing young talent, has provided the perfect platform for Vaibhav to flourish.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Personal Life and Challenges

Balancing Fame and Humility

Despite his meteoric rise, Vaibhav remains a shy, grounded teenager. A Class 8 student, he balances academics with rigorous training, embodying discipline beyond his years. His family’s sacrifices, including financial struggles, have fueled his determination. Sanjeev Suryavanshi, responding to age fraud allegations in 2024, defended his son’s birth date (March 27, 2011) with BCCI bone test records, emphasizing Vaibhav’s hard work over controversy.

Vaibhav’s estimated net worth, around ₹10-20 lakhs as of 2025, reflects his IPL earnings and early endorsements. He keeps his personal life private, focusing solely on cricket, with no public information about relationships. His love for the game, once rivaled only by his fondness for Doraemon, now defines his identity.

Career Stats at a Glance

Vaibhav’s stats across formats highlight his prodigious talent:
